I am setting up my R+P on m Dana 60 this weekend and was wondering if anybody had the specs for the D60 front with used gears (I am swapping housings)

Also does anybody have some color pics of the correct gear pattern? I have some black and white drawings of the pattern but I figure good color ones will help more.

Thanks

Here's the pattern I came up with on my 44.

when are you coming to set mine up Nobody?

how did you deal with eth shims behind the carrier bearings?

Ive heard you can trial them with the shims behind the races in the housing, then once its right move them to the carrier and press bearings on on top?

Ive got a detroit on the way, and IM trying to get a feel for what its gonna be like.

oh yeah sorry for muddying your post man!

check out randys ring and pinion site, they have specs for most axles.

I'm certainly no pro...I sat in on a few installs, and that was the first time on my own. SnortClown gave me a few pointers, and that really helped me out a lot. Definately helps to have someone that knows what's going help on the first time.....

It definately not rocket science like everyone thinks, but if you don't have the proper tools then forget it. Take your time, plan on the first one taking all day.....or longer.

The carrier is a tight fit in the housing, if you tried to put the shims on the outside it wouldn't be very accurate, and you'd probably fubar the shims anyway.

You'll need to pull the bearings a few times, so if you don't have the right tools forget it. Did I mention you need the right tools?

If you're just installing a detroit, technically you shouldn't have to mess with the pinion, but it just all depends on the pattern. Using the old carrier shims would probably be a good place to start, but it might not be anywhere close........big help I am huh.

Pay attention to how hard it is pulling the carrier.....the detroit will have to be just as snug. You need that bearing preload.

the proper removal, installation of the carrier requires a case spreader...........my Junk yard D61 carrier fell out when i pulled the shafts (Dam ford crap)

please excuse me if i'm off base here......
you can *slightly* enlarge the inside race of an old set of bearings, thereby not requiring pressing, so that when you are doing the trial and error shimming, you don't have to worry about knackering a good set of bearings accidently, by pulling them off and on multiple times.
when you get the correct pattern/shim specs, then you press the new bearings on.
if this isn't valid for this kind of application, sorry again, just what i've heard, and thought it was a cool tip....

I honed the old bearings out on my amc20 rear, and that made it alot easier!

what tool are you talking about to pull the carrier bearings?
and install them for that matter, I helped a buddy replace carrier bearings on his front axle ( I think a dan 50 ford F250 deisel 3/4)
he put teh bearings in the oven, and the carrier in a cooler full of icewater ( and beer)

and they slide right on. I was hoping I could do the same.

I disagree.

I've done several gear setups and pulled/installed carriers many many times. All you have to do is jam the carrier with a prybar so that it can't turn, then turn the pinion with a pipe wrench, and the contact forces on the teeth will spin the carrier right out of the housing, nice slow and steady.

For the reinstall with proper preload, *slightly* skew the main carrier bearing races at a taper to get it started, then tap the bearings in with a rubber mallet, alternating sides to keep it square.

As for the honing out an old set of bearings trick, DO IT!!! I did and it makes it real nice, because you're unlikely to get the shims right the first time. There's no way in hell you could not booger up the shims if you try to put them between the race and the housing, they need to be behind the bearings.

If you intend to do the ice water/torch trick to get the bearings on the last time, because you don't have a press, then you'd better make damn sure you use some setup bearings (i.e. old honed out ones) and get the shims just right before putting the new bearings on good and straight - you'll never get them back off without a bearing puller and a press.

By the way it takes quite a while to hone out bearings, they're pretty hard, so don't despair; it's worth it.

P.S. you ARE a dick for having two 60 fronts. Don't you have a conscience? Please send one to 635 Adams, Davis, Ca 95616, thanks. :flipoff2:
