: Colorado emissions requirements?
offroadr35 02-14-2002, 04:33 PM Is anyone familiar with the Denver area emissions rules? I have a 72 Bronco with a 93 5.0 sefi enging that I need to get registered here. Will I be tested based on the 72 bronco or the 93 mustang? what emissions equipment will i need? any sure-fire ways to pass? I don't have cats on it right now, i'm assuming i'll at least need that.
Thanks,
Steve
pcorssmit 02-14-2002, 05:04 PM 25 years and older you can get collector plates. Good for 5 years, do emmisions when you first get them and never again, as long as you keep them current. Technically, you will need all the emissions equipment from the 5.0 (I think), except the cats. Realistically, you'll go to the emissions place, it will pass with flying colors, and you'll get your sticker. '82 and newer do a dyno test every 2 years, '81 and older do the old style stationery test annually (except with collector tags and before ~1960). Diesels are every year. The # for the Denver emissions tech center in Denver (the people who can give you all the info on the emissions laws) is 303-744-2442, ext. 3. They were pretty helpful when I did my motor swap 5 years ago (I had to get it recertified, since I did a diesel swap. Gas swaps here are much easier, as far as this stuff).
Pete
If you don't tell them what's under the hood how will they ever know? They wouldn't do any visual inspections on anything that old. I have never had the emissions techs pop the hood on my '75 CJ. They stick the sniffer in the tailpipe, stick the RPM sensor on the hood and do their thing. It always passes the sniffer test (EFI) and out the door I go.
evilfij 02-14-2002, 07:50 PM You sure that is not a 65 bronco?
You can't get collector plates for it. You need to be 25 year old to get the insurance or drive it then.
Ron
Roxywheels 02-14-2002, 10:20 PM Along the same line of questioning...what cities or counties don't require emissions? And how tough is it to register your vehicle there if you just go get a PO Box. I know that once I get mine running again it isn't going to pass...it smokes way too much at the moment. Yes an engine swap is the plan, but I until I get to that point I'd like to be able to drive it once in a while. Am I screwed until the engine swap? :roxy:

2002 - 1972 = 30 years old. 30 > 25. You can get collector plates.
Roxy, its basically along the front range that has emissions. Not sure which counties are included (some are split as I recall). I think Estes Park is OK, I know Durango is. I don't think you can register to a PO box, could be wrong, though. Got any friends/family that live elsewhere in the state?
You have a CJ, right? Got any friends that have one that will pass? Borrow theirs for a day, and swap out the windshields.
Pete
Honkylips 02-15-2002, 07:58 AM My jeep is registered in Weld County so there's no emissions. I don't think a PO box would cut it though. I have a buddy that lives out there. Your best bet is to find a friend/relative/somebody that lives out of the metro area.

Don't even have to do that anymore, they don't give a sticker as of June last year. Only snag is the emmisions test has the vin of the car tested on it - some emissions places don't actually look at the vehicle's vin# though, just enter what is on the card or paper you give them.
As for passing with a newer engine - on my '74 Bronco they did pop the hood, but only to hook up an rpm guage for the test. Beyond that, he could have cared less what was under the hood - and told me so :) , said he didn't care as long as I passed the pre-'81 requirements.
once you get the collector tags, just be sure to keep paying the registration, if it lapses, you need to pass emmisions again.

Thats how is was registered before...my ex had it registered at a friends place, but since I took the Jeep in the divorce I don't think he's gonna be too willing to help me out! LOL :roxy:

I have a YJ. I guess I could call around an ask at a few places about the PO Box....I could always just say that I'm moving there and renting a room from someone and my only address will be my PO Box and see how that story flies! I did have someone offer to help me out and let me use their address, but I don't want him to make his wife mad! lol Some wives just wouldn't understand why a strange womans mail is coming to their house! These are the times that being female causes a problem! :roxy:

Just find out how poorly it really does do the first time you have to get an emmisions test. I THINk the second one if free if you don't pass. There are things that they sell at checker that will clean up that smoke. Get some of that, and put premium in and you will probably pass.. :D Lets just say I had an old Mazda that when I would start it up brought about it's own little blue cloud that was probably 1/4 of an acre big if I let it run long enough! It was nasty but I got it to pass by getting some of that and the premium and letting it run for at least 30 minutes before hand.
I know they won't do the PO box thang. My fiance' was in an apartment that had no mail boxes so she had a PO however they would only take her physical address.

I thought about trying that stuff, but wasn't sure if it was worth the money. My next problem is finding another set of tires, because they won't run the 35's on the rollers. See? Not having to go thru all of this would be so much easier! (Although I do realize its for a very good reason) :roxy:

Nope that's not your problem it's theirs! If they can't run em, then they can't do the test on your vehicle. Those are the only tires you have for your rig and that's what it run's around with right? :D Plus you have boggers and those probably really wouldn't mix well with the rollers. Anyways they will run your rig without the rollers if your tires are to big. Now this is where being a female is EXTREAMLY helpful. Just turn on that "bitch switch" once you get into the place and they say a thing about not being able to run those tires. Just go off on them and they will let you pass... :D

But will they really test me if they can't run it on the rollers because of the tires or will they turn me away and tell me to get some other tires? I know it says on their site that they won't test you with tires over 33's...I think, don't quote me on that! But I do know they won't test 35's and especially boggers! I can easily turn on my "bitch switch", but I'd hate to turn it on and then have it hurt me in the end! I would hate to pi$$ off the tech that could possibly feel bad for me and let me pass! ;) :roxy:

I think from what I have read from others if you just say I don't have any other tires they just run you through the stand still test. I don't know for sure though 100%. Try the Colo board and see if anyone has had that issue and what they did. I would guess you would pass just because it would be to complicated for them to try and drive it. LOL

Yup.
I went through this crap a couple months ago. Doesn't matter how tall they really are (mine 35s measure 33"), they go by the sidewall. I was really pissed when I found this out, because up untill 6 months ago they would test up to 35s. I tried argueing/reasoning with them, both at the test place and the main office, but all it did was waste my time and piss me off more. It took me 4 trips to get mine done, all to find out what I already knew, that my truck runs clean. I ran mine with the stock tires of my DD that I still had laying around the garage. It was truly a lovely sight, my beater that fits 39.5s, with 35s on the front and 245/75R16s on the rear. :D
Are YJ vin tags on the windsheild frame? Is it efi (much less likely to fail than a 258 w/carb)?. If its just some smoke, try running the oil on the low side, and run thick oil (ie 20-W50).
The only good thing about the dyno test is that it is every 2 years. I'm considering getting an older title/parts truck just so I can get the collector tags. What pisses me off is jumping through hoops to show someone else what I already know, that my truck runs clean. If all they cared about was air quality, why do they need a visual inspection? On a stationary test, I can understand why a visual is needed, since they can't test for NOx and its not a real world type test (no load), but on a dyno test where they also check NOx, there is no reason. But I guess it could be worse, at least we don't have safety inspections.

They have to test it as a '72. They probably won't even open the hood, no emissions components are required. OTH, if you have said components, you should be able to pass '72 real easy. They were screwing up with mine and testing it by the year of the engine ('64) rather than the year of the truck ('84). Should have seen the guys face when it blew 0.01% CO (limit was 4.50%) and 32ppm HC (limit was 1000ppm). Now they are doing mine right and testing it as an '84; it still passes but not by nearly the margin.
Roxywheels 02-15-2002, 11:36 AM I think the YJ vin is on the dash in the windshield...its been so long since I've been in the thing I can't remember! LOL I'm also going to have to get the vin verified because its being trransfered from the ex's name to mine. When that happens isn't it possible to get a temp tag for like 45 days without the emissions?
I wish it wasn't the carbed 258 but it is! It smokes pretty bad...has some major blow by not to mention a wicked rear main seal leak! I was told that running synthetic in it with hide the smoke...that it would run clear. Is that correct? I would hate to put synthetic in it, have it not help at all and then run out the leak onto the driveway! LOL If I'm able to get a temp tag for it that would help. I'd be able to dirve it to someone that has offered to swap the engine out for me and then all I'd need to worry about is the tires! :roxy:
offroadr35 02-15-2002, 11:47 AM i just called. they said before 75 they won't even look under the hood. So, i won't need any emissions equipment and it will be tested with t 72 limits. with a 93 sefi it should pass with flying colors. For others in Colorado that are interested, this is the main website for the testing. air care colorado (http://www.aircarecolorado.com)
Thanks,
Steve
pcorssmit 02-15-2002, 11:58 AM You can get a 45 day temp tag when you first buy a vehicle; sometimes they are nice and will give it to you at other times as well. Its kind of up to the person behind the counter. I've never had to do a VIN verification unless I bought a vehicle with an out of state title. If the VIN is on the windshield (and you can find someone with a similar heep), just go to Envirotest with no paperwork, and tell them you need an e-test. I would at least make sure that its a 258 powered YJ, though.
If you just want to drive it somewhere, getting a 1 day temp tag is no problem, you could even be honest and tell them you have to drive it to the shop to get a new motor. If you live in Arapahoe county, I generally have good luck (as far as wait times) w/the DMV on Arapahoe road near Centennial. Temp tags are $2.
I don't know about the smoke problem with synthetic, but I have heard that it can make leaks (ie rear main) much worse.
pcorssmit 02-15-2002, 12:00 PM (for offroadr35) Just FYI, pre'82 you don't have to go to Envirotest (but you can), you can also go to an independent station.
Pete
evilfij 02-15-2002, 04:22 PM I was saying offroader35 was not 25 not his truck.
If you are not 25 you can't get insurance for collector plates.
Ron
pcorssmit 02-15-2002, 04:42 PM Bullshit. If thats true, I better tell my 19 year old brother to quit driving his '70 K5 w/colloctor tags. Better tell the ins. company to give him a refund, too. :flipoff2:
Pete
offroadr35 02-15-2002, 04:57 PM yeah, that's definitely not true here, i don't know about other places. Collector's plates just mean you don't have to get emissions tested, they don't affect insurance at all.

Roxywheels 02-15-2002, 05:01 PM Has anyone applied for the hardship waiver? Any idea of exactly what they consider a "hardship" :roxy:

they did on my 53...
they didn't care what it was as long as it had the egr stuff that I had to add
mountain bronco 02-15-2002, 07:58 PM So I let all my angelic friends register their vehicles here in Lake County (Leadville)... 3 visits from the law and barrages of parking tickets....
Roxy, sure whats one more? I'll even give you a letter stating that you just got hired to work in my brewery, so that they have to let you register it here.
Does that help????

Wow...really? Thats a very generous offer to someone you've never met! I'm not wanted by the law...no parking tickets...no warrants! (at least the I am aware of!) Hell...for that I would even be willing to sweep some floors or wash some glasses! First I need to actually get it to start again...then if I'm not able to get some type of waiver I'd love to take you up on your offer, as long as I won't upset any wife or GF! Thanks again for your offer! :roxy:
mountain bronco 02-15-2002, 09:06 PM No biggie.... Why do you need to have it running???
Just bring in the title, proof of insurance, the "letter" when you are ready and you are good to go.
Did I mention cheaper property taxes as well???
When I registered my wife's car, they turned their backs literally when I signed her name...
Lots of my friends from the poeples republic of boulder register their diesels up here...
Just promise not to rob a bank... I don't like gettin woken up at 4 am

No need to worry about me robbing a bank...I just got the jeep in the divorce...he got all the guns!
I'll let you know if the waiver thing won't work out for me. I also need to email the ex and have him send the title. If he won't send it then I have to go to the court to get it since its in the divorce papers. Hopefully I won't have to do that.
Thanks again for the help and I'll be in touch! :roxy:
