: Fuel Consumption

Seeking ideas to solve my current fuel consumption problem...
I'm currently experiencing fuel consumption figures to make a Landcruiser owner proud! around 20l per 100Km (11.8mpg). This is after I have recently had the thing professionally tuned. It is the 13B motor with the twin throat carb. The report back after the tune had 1 pot significantly worse than the others on the compression test (3@180, 1@150). Some people following me the other day reckoned they could see fuel coming out of the exhaust as a fine white mist when I put my foot down. Occasionally I have some hesitation when I put the boot in, and I'm starting to wonder if this is flooding? I've checked the choke operation and it seems fine. Visibly the Carby is quite clean.
Any Ideas Team?
Cheers
Mike

White smoke - blown head gasket. coolant is leaking into the cylinder. Probably explains your low compression on the one cyclinder too.

Could be a cracked block but pull the head and see what you find.

My gas milage went to hell as soon as I put the Boggers on, I'm getting around 10mpg

Hmm Coolant levels haven't been dropping so I had hoped that a blown 'anything' would not be the cause. Probably is well worth checking though,

how big is your zuk, and how hard are you pushing that rotary. they were never known for be good at getting miliage. bet it runs like hell though. i only get 17 or so milies to the gallon with my zuk on 33s with 5.12 gears and a 4.16 t case with the stock motor. mike

If the one cylinder is a lot different in pressure than the others there is likely something wrong there. Cylinder number 3? On a Suzuki it is normally the one that has issues. Check the valves too.

If there is white smoke you have a coolant leak...somewhere. Exhaust isn't white unless it is cold.

For the record, with a stock engine with an Aisin carb I am getting around 25 mpg with 5.12 gears and 33x9.5 BFGs.

Hey Moose, that mileage is amazing. I wonder what is so different. Our U.S. government mandated 50 lbs of vaccum lines, switches, sensors and other smog crap can't be making that much difference :( . When scwafish got his lwb from Canada, he got outrageously good mileage. For some reason, most folks I know are getting really low mpg's. I put a realtively fresh 8-valve 1.6, header and 2 inch exhaust in and although the performance is dramatically better, I didn't get any real mileage improvement. I put in a new oxygen sensor, swapped out the computer and even tried plating the EGR valve off. No help. What's your secret

I'm going to guess it is the Aisin carb. The truck is completely stock except for the lift, tires, axle gears and armour and such. Nothing has been done to the engine - at least since I've owned it and it was stock when I got it. The tires are pretty light duty - BFGs in 33x9.5x15 so I'm not spinning half of the weight that a lot of guys with Intercos and such are spinning. Probably makes a huge difference. I'm easy on the go pedal too (grandpa) - although I've been known to slam from 5th to 3rd for passing.

The Aisin is a really simple carb, not a lot to it.

I really feel for you guys down south that got saddled with those nasty Hitachi carbujector things with the ECU and hoses up the ying-yang.

Thanks Guys for the advice much appreciated!
History on my zook is:
Have done bugger all to the motor myself since purchased 2nd hand with 200,000K on the clock 'cept have the carby rebuilt a coupla years ago.
Running 31" Yoko Geo MT's and have rockhopper t-case.
Have 2" exhaust (no cat conv) and straight thru muffler. (Bloody noisy little beastie but I luv it.)
I have been known to give the thing a caning but generally maintain it quite well- not a daily driver so doesn't get a heap of road work.
People travelling behind me described a "mist" rather than smoke and I have not been able to replicate this whilst stationary. I do get a little bit of black smoke as I back off from a good rev though when stationary.
Cheers

root moose are you taking into accout the fact that yor speed o is running faster with the 5.12s. if you are, i am impressed, unless its all slow speed that is great miliage. i hade a stock ht that would hit 28 to 30 all the time but this is at 70 mph down the highway.

Havent read everything here but are running a cat if not maybee the mist you are seing is just moisture not being compltely dried
I doubt it is unspent fuel you would have to have like 0 pressure in that #3cylinder for fuel to make it all the way out to the tail pipe and as far as your pressure goes I do belive general rule 10% varience from higest spec to low cylinder I would definatly
due a leak down test on that clyinder and check your valves
