I say go buy a DieHard Gold or a Rangehandler 1/2 the money, there's a Sears on everyother corner. The Rangehandler is made for high abuse applications.

First off are either of those manufactures making a gell batterie
I dont think so. 2nd better warranty it's made to be completely drained and recharched basically abused if you will, 3rd this is a very good price for a yellow top that can handle the winch ,radio, cb, lights and what ever else you want to put on it. 4th the post wasn't asking for an opinion just if anybody was interested!!! our club is getting a good deal on them through a local shop and we thought maybee we'd extend the offer to fellow 4wheelers. so in 4 yrs when your Rangehandler :barf: :barf: give me a call:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I've got a red top in my 'kick and a exide for my "derby" battery. both have been severly abused and holding up well. Diehard gold's couldn't take my abuse. Gell cell's kick@ss:D

Second the not taking abuse vote. killed the diehard gold with my winch when the alternator died and I was stuck. Wouldn't take a charge.

I ended up getting a red-top for $110, can't remember which. This is a sweet deal on the yellow top... they're usually at least $20 more than the red, and this is what I got a red top for.

Somebody jump on this.

Uhh hey RockRat - I've gotten some feedback on these batteries, that they don't seem to last very long. I see a lot of positive posts here, but one guy I talked to (US Army) says they burn through mountains of 'em - they just don't last.

Now, I can't verify any of this, 'cause I've never tried 'em, but with some of the bad things I've heard, I'd be a little cautious. Anybody else here had short-life problems with the optima's?

Intresting... A deep-cycle battery (yellow top) isn't really designed to use as a main vehicle battery. They like to be charged, drained extensively, and charged again. The red-top is more of the continuous-top-off starter type battery.

If I was going to be doing LOTS of winching I'd have gone yellow top, or to dual batteries with a yellow top as the secondary one. I knew that's not what a yellow top was designed for, but that's the first I've heard of them crapping out because of it...

Personally I'd recommend the red top to anyone. I had mine for about six months with LOTS of winching done with it, and left the headlights on for about 4 hours the other day. Cranked a little slow, but it started...

I've run all three Optima's and I cant say that they are better than any other gel cell out there but they are not even on the same level with a conventional battery. I think a red top will work fine for most rigs but I like the blue (marine) cause it has the nifty studs on top for my winch cables and any other aux. stuff I want to hook up.

I have a red top and I love it! Everytime I flat tow, I jus turn the running lights on in the Sammi. I've towed all through the night many times and never had a problem starting even after 8 or 9 hours. I do have LED lights in the back though. I haven't winch tested it yet.

I run two red top optimas and they both have top and side studs. You are right though, the extra connections come in handy.

yup.
The side posts are only connected to the top posts with a thin strip of metal... can't take heavy power.
