When swapping dana 20's, do I need to swap the gear on the spud shaft as well?
Also I understand that the tailshaft is the weak point of the dana 20....it this a trail fix if you carry a spare? Can you just swap tailhousings real quick, or does it require removing the whole case?

i personally have no experience with the dana 20, but on this thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32313) it looked like he replaced it with the case in the bronco.

Yeah, I'd suggest carrying a whole shaft/tailhousing assembly, that is what I intend to carry.
It appears that the hard part (in the field)will be keeping the 13 rollers in the counterbore of the shaft while you insert it through the sliding gear. But you can remove the bottom plate if you do lose one.
The spud shaft and bull gears are all the same as far as I know.

Carry a spare output shaft if you want. Come over sometime and you can tear apart one of my spare ones to see what has to be done. WH has a new manufacture HD output shaft that should eliminate that as a problem.

i used to carry a spare not anymroe :p
they are easy to replace on the trail, just getting harder to find some good spares
What swaping of D20's are you talking about? Auto and Manuals used a different intermate shaft

Actually I'm just refering to the gear on the spud shaft. Is it a matched set like a ring and pinion?
I have a NP435, D20 combo using the AA adapter. I'm planning on hoarding dana 20 parts in the future, so I was just wondering if it's necessary to keep the original gear with each case.
Nice to know the output shaft can be a field fix.
Roger why don't you let me bring one of those 20's home to practice on. I'll bring it back, I promise........he he he:angel:

for field fixing the 20 try this link, I gave a step by step description on how to...dana 20 thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24163&highlight=dana+20+output+shaft)
The spud shafts are like for like interchangeable. It's probably a good idea to keep the input or"bullgear" with it's mating gears. Not absolutely necessary. They aren't matched like a ring and pinion but there are a few different teeth counts and with the 26 tooth gears there are two different pitches to the teeth, so if you keep them matched, you're guaranteed no hassles. hth
