this is the first dana(front) i've worked on and i put new bearings and balls in it and noticed at the axle ends there were no seals...i talked to the local parts guy and he said nothing came up and the seals were in the tube by the 3rd... so i put it together and i was looking at a mag and it said it was very important to use seals at the end of a dana 60....they talked about sealsit ...now my question is do i need to pull it apart and use something like this or do they typically not use anything ??? thanks for any info you have

You tell us. 44 or 60 --it's cast in the webbing by the center section. Open knuckle front ends use a seal on each axle tube and it's got to be there. Pull it down again and slide the axles out--you can see where the seal is riding. the other seals are ing the wheelend/spindle

If you don't have any seals what will keep the oil in? Pretty much all Dana 44 have seals, at least all the ones I've seen.

okay i didn't explain well enough....it is a dana 44....and yes there are seals inside the tube near the third member......it is an open knuckle and i was concerned with water mudd etc getting into the tubes

On mine the seals were reached from the center section so the reing gear carrier would have to come out

There aren't seals inside the tubes. There are dust guards/seals that can attach to the axle shafts though. I dont use them cause I end up rebuilding my axles every year anyways ;)

This wouldn't have been the Dana 60 article in the latest JP Magazine would it? If so they are creating a front Dana 60 out of a rear one. Rear 60's don't have the seals near the third member. They are at the ends of the tubes in a rear application (which they removed), and therefore they had to install some aftermarket inner type to get it to seal up.

Your 44 will have inner seals (contrary to what Keith said) since it is a front 44. Without them nothing would keep gear oil from leaking out the tubes.

The dust guards on the shafts as Keith mentioned will keep most of the junk out of the tubes.

Exactly right. I think you mis understood what I was trying to say. You are absolutely correct....there have to be seals....I just meant there are not any on the ends of the tubes ;)
