I've been given a ford 9" for free. Unfortunately is has 28spline shafts. What is it gonna take to convert to 31 spline shafts? I think it may be the big bearing... because we pulled the shaft today to count the splines and found it to be a 28. What exactly tells me if its a big bearing or not? It had a freakin huge bearing on the axle shaft.. and the axle tubes and housing are massive.

This will be going on my cherokee if it wont be incredibly expensive to get rollin.

If the nuts on the axle flange are 11/16ths vs 5/8ths it is a big bearing. Somebody chime in if I'm wrong.

i did use a 1/4 in to unbolt it ... so if thats the case then at least i know its a big bearing according to that info. Would i just need the shafts, carrier, r&p ? Thanks again for any help.

Use already answered your own question except the r&p would be the same. At least that is my guess.

whatever i dont honestly know... if someone just could list exactly what i need.. that'd be great... otherwise i'll head over to a 4x4 shop and have them check it out.

Well if you throw in a locker you can call it a carrier but if you aren't puting a locker in then it would be spider gears.

Check out the wild horses website. They have a lot of info and alloy 28 spline shafts.
