: HP60 Questions

First off, I am looking at a truck a few provinces over and having a hard time dealing with the old man selling it

The truck is a 1978 F250 4x4. I asked him about "snow packages" etc...he told me his friend bought it new in 78 and used it for logging so he thinks it would be the "heavy duty" front :smokin:

Now I am waiting for his son to get back to me with a BOM, or a hub measurement etc (the old man knew it had 4.10's).

As I was looking at the Dana60 bible I figured I would get the BOM for the HP60 I wanted just so when he called I was prepared.

So I check out the BOM's for a 78/79 F250/F350 and get this:

Bill Of Material /Differential Type/ Ratio

610023-12 /STD/ 4.10
610023-13 /STD/ 4.10
610023-5 /STD/ 4.10
610023-6 /STD/ 4.10
610023-8 /T/L/ 4.10

Now my question is, whats with the different "endings"? Like 12,13,5,6...Are these not the EXACT same diffs? Why the different last digit?

2nd question...Looking at the last BOM listed, it says "T/L". Does that stand for "top load" meaning "high pinion"?

If the above is true, are the first 4 diffs I listed "STD" low pinion?

Maybe STD means the gears are NOT reverse cut?

Any help would be great as I am expecting a phone call this afternoon!

:D :D :D

T/L means Tracklock, STD is an open diff.
The last digits in the BOM are generally for small variations in the same size housing such as gear ratios, diff types, shafts sizes, etc...
In the case of the BOM listing for the 78/79 F250/F350 Snofighter, 4 out of the 5 BOMs list the same internal parts, with the 5th being the one with the Trashlock.

As for if it's HP or LP, the 4.10 ring and pinion kit listed on the Dana website in those BOMs is the same part number as the one that came in my D60F out of an 88 F350 DRW BOM 610255 which is indeed HP....

The alternative to the D60HP would have been a D44HP. I do not believe low pinion front ends were available in 78.

the ford low pinion 60 was only in 76 and 77, if memory serves.

And Most Likely It Will Have 3.54 Gears, Not 4.10
