: Dana 60 rear questions
oldjeep 02-15-2002, 07:27 AM Just got done taking apart my newly aquired D60 rear and I've got a couple of questions. It's a Semi-Float with 35 spline c-clip axles.
1) Do all D60 Semi-floats use c-clips?
2) If not, what kind of lockers are avaliable for 35 spline with clips?
3) If the clips are not the way to go, where are you guys buying 35 spline axles with retainer plates and what type of housing end bearing do you run?
My initial thought is to just get the axles shortened, resplined and redrilled for the bolt pattern I need. It would run about $140 for the pair vs $300 for brand new mosers.
Thanks

Nope

I'm not sure but I bet it's limited

I think that you may need to cut the ends off and weld on mew outers. Use the old style Large Ford outers. I don't remember where the cheapest place is to get them though. Maybe Chassis works here in Sacramento.
oldjeep 02-15-2002, 08:41 AM It looks like you can get an ARB, Detroit C-Locker, and a power-lock to fit these shafts.
Coincidentally I have a set of Strange 9" Outers I bought to redo a Scout D44, so I can use them.
So the remaining question is - can these axles be modified to use retainer plates? Or do I need completely new shafts.
Suddenly I'm not as excited to find 35 spline shafts in this axle. Doesn't seem like it buys you anything if you have to redo the outers and shafts anyway.

Wow, I was not aware that there was that much available...

Should be the ones.

I really don't know. Call someone at Mark Williams (http://www.markwilliams.com) and ask them. They know alot about axles...Try to buy from somewhere else though. They are proud of the products

There is alway a "Catch"...sux huh?
Gozuki 02-15-2002, 09:06 AM AFAIK, the only locker available for this is the lockright/ez locker. The ARB doesn't give acess to the clips, and there is no c-locker for this application...This is after calling all the manufacturers about 6 mos ago...If I'm wrong, please let me know, I need one...Mike

Well, ARB lists a locker for the 80->Up FORD D60 HD rears which are all 35 spline with C-clips. And it's different than the one they list for the 35 spline Floater so I'm assuming the difference is the c-clips. Ask tem about RD42 & RD43 which are the ones listed for the SF 35 spline fords.
The detroit c-locker however, I found an arcticle saying they were going to make them but can't find them in anyones catalog so I'm not sure they exist.
Powerlocks came in these axles for the factory as an option - so they are avaliable for sure.
jdjanda 02-15-2002, 10:09 AM I have a D60 SF that does not use C-clips. It is actually a 60-2, uses Dana 44 outers. I know not much stronger then a D44, but I can build it up as time permits.

Is it 30 spline or 35? What I meant was that as far as I've been able to tell, all 80 + 35 spline D60's used in Ford pickups had c-clips.
I've got a call into moser to see what the possibiolities are for the stock axles or wether it's better/cheaper to just get new custom shafts.
Some fun
jdjanda 02-15-2002, 10:56 AM 30 Spline, uses retainers just like a 44. 63.5 inches wide, 5x5.5 pattern. The axles are for the most part 44 specs. With the axle I've only picked up strength in the R&P. The axle I have is out of an IH Travelall.

That should mean that moser has made this type of shaft before - for guys with the 30 spline axles that upgrade to 35.
They must be busy today, usually Moser answers his email within a couple hours.
Thanks

emsoffroad 02-15-2002, 12:41 PM 60-2 from j4000, 35spl, no c-clip. only down fall the bearings are $95 each
Gozuki 02-15-2002, 07:50 PM Don't know about the ARB, but the tech guy from Tractech says no go on any of his apps...Including detroits....:(
66CJdean 02-15-2002, 08:01 PM The cheepest option is cut it down, respline the axles, keep it c-clip, and weld it up. Lets face it the thing is 35 spline so the whole c-clip deal isn't a big deal. If you cut it down then just make it so both axles are the same length and have a spare made.
Chuck, ya really need a 60 with a V6 and 35's?
Sell it off and run a 44, IMO
Chad H 02-16-2002, 04:34 AM What are all the different spline counts youll find on a d60? Are there 16 spline setups?

I'm twisting 41 shafts right now - mainly due to the spool I'm guessing. The only reason I want to run the 60, is once it's shaved it'll leave me with the same clearance as a 44 and I'll never break it. Plus, the cost to build a decent offset 44 the size I need it is about the same as building the 60.

That's not a bad idea. And as long as the axles can be redrilled to 5 on 5.5 it would be pretty cheap. I plan on running a spool anyway so welding it up would be fine., and disc brakes, so even if I was concerned about the c-clip it wouldn't matter. Can't keep the shafts the same though, I'm running a D18 so the rear will be offset.
Then I can just stick one of those ring spacers on my 3.54 carrier so my 5.38's will fit. The ultimate cheap solution.
Thanks for the idea.
66CJdean 02-16-2002, 08:56 PM To offset it just cut one side. I don't know who makes a c-clip spool other and lincoln.

Any idea what width that gives you? I havn't taken good measurements yet, but my front axle is 55" - Cut 3" off one side of a front scout d44.
Lincoln locker will be fine - that's what's in my D41.
Thanks

Did some measuring last night, and unfortunately I need to cut both sides to get down to the width I need. Just cutting down the short side would get me a width somewhere around 62"
SMART ASS 02-18-2002, 11:08 AM does anyone use FF dana 60?
