I am from Toronto and am planning a trip to Scottsdale Arizona in May. Was thinking of renting a jeep while I was there.
Is there any places that I could rent a rig to wheel or that takes people out on trail runs there? I've heard of places that will give you a rig and take you out on a day trip wheeling.
anyone from around there that can help me out?
There are jeep tours that you can ride around as a passenger, I would just rent a SUV from one of the big car rental outfits.
It is quite possible the temps could be in the 100's in May. Only the most die hard locals are out wheelin. (nice to have the trails to ourselves) Try the online yellow pages under Jeep Tours

Check out http://www.azvjc.org/interact.asp (AzVJC) .It's a internet based Arizona jeep club. They have runs on a regular basis and might even know where you could rent a jeep. It's an Email/Yahoo based club so sign up and check it out.

If you're going to *rent* a Jeep, why not give Trail 42 a try? It's nothing like the stuff out in Florence Junction, but it's a fun little trail that is very close to Scottsdale, but you might not want to do it by yourself, if you get stuck it's a LONG walk back, and there are a lot of chollas in that area...
I'm trying to think what could be done with a stock rental Jeep....
How about going the backway to Crown King? It's a great way to get out of the heat, and in a stocker there will be some challenging obstacles!
Another doozy is the Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona, about two hours north of Scottsdale but *definitely* worth the drive, it's beautiful country up there, and the temperature is also a little better up there. Very doable in a stocker.
I agree with the Crown King run, would be fun in a stocker, nice scenery.

I'm pretty sure there's a clause in the rental agreements on offroad use. Better make sure to check it out before you take it out and get screwed if something happens. I'd say just take a Hummer tour from one of the hotels in Scottsdale. I think they even come and pick you up. Saw about five of them today coming back from Saguaro lake area. If you go on the Toy BBS and look up user EricZ and email him, he can probably give you the name of one of the companies that do it. He used to drive for them every once in a while. If not, hit the yellow pages for Scottsdale and they'll pop up.

Thanks guys! that's some great info and will be a good start. I'll check into those ideas and keep you posted.
The rental aggreement..if I remember correct states that your insurance is void if you take it offroad.....at least that's what it said when I rented a exploder in Calgary....bastards..I also don't really like the idea of going out somewhere I don't know alone....as you mentioned "long walks"...can't see the wife liking that much.
Depending On the costs I think the tours might be the best idea. I'll look into those.
Thanks guys!
