OK I searched to no avail. What's the best way to make XJ door removeable? Also I'm thinking about picking up a set of extras from a yard to make half doors, anyone done it?

My friend and have been thinking about this idea for years. We just havent gotten around to making any yet. :D We were going to take a full door and chop it down making it a halfy. Then setting up some sort of quick release pin.

Aren't the Doors some sort of Unibody flex dampener?:flipoff2:

I have a 4 door and was only planning on doing the front two. Apparently the doors are not structural to the unibody, or at least I read that somewhere.

I was thinking about some sort of quick release pin too. A clevise pin could be dropped down through the holes to make the pivot point and use a hitch pin at the bottom to secure it.

These would be the basic parts...

...just gotta make the hinges

I will do this someday. I was thinking of making some door frames out of tubing like the safari bars for the Wranglers. I saw this at SEMA and really like the idea. It's for a Toy but could be made for a XJ.

Damn, that write up is old... I keep forgetting that I even have that on my castlenet account server. :D

Cool to see that people still use it though. :)

Looklike I'm gonna be another one to use it. I like the disclaimer about PW and PDL, I have those, plus power mirrors. Anything to make it more of a PITA on my XJ. :D

Herzog, can you post a link to the xjtech page on that site? I tried to strip down the url but it keeps saying FORBIDDEN at every step back.

WSUXJER did you do a write-up on your topless conversion? If you did I'd sure like to see it. (I'm the guy that sent you that pic of white knuckle hill and asked if it was you.)

So from the article i read, and no negative comments, i'm assuming taking the front doors off wont hurt the strength of the XJ unibody. Nice, looks like i'm going doorless.:flipoff2:

It is NOT a strength portion of the cherokee, i was planning on doing it... my buddy has quick release pins, and just pulls the entire door for wheeling. Looks funky going down the fwy though.

my front door have been removable for 3 years now, no problems, took me 1/2 an hour each side,
the body side hinge has 1 "finger" the door side hinge has 2, cut off the lower on both the top and bottom hinge, weld a new hinge roll pin into the top "finger" of both door side hinges, and just drop the door into the body side hinge, remove the door check strap, the electrical conectors are just behind the kick plates on easy to undo conectors. check out my pics.photos.yahoo.com/petehamann

I'll be making some in the next few months. I dont reccomend quick pins, they are a PITA, big time! I would rather screw em...

I plan on leaving the frame area of the window and just cut a "U"
Shape in the main door panel. Reason is, i can make some canvas/plastic transparent removable much like YJ's have :)

So incase it rains or snows while I wheel all i have to do is zipper up the cover...

Here's my amature cad :p

Here the tube doors that I thinking about fabing up.

I'm not going to worry about snow or rain. If it looks like bad weather just leave the doors on. ;)

That is really the only thing I ever posted. I just never had the ambition to add more tech.

How about some sort of doors-off mirror mounts? Anyone rigged this up yet. Here in PA the bears are real pricky about that kinda stuff.

The easiest way to modify the doors of an older Cherokee for quick removal doesn't involve any welding, release pins or any of that stuff. All it takes is an appointment with Dr. SawzAll and Nurse DieGrinder and BigHammer.

First, unbolt the door and set it aside. Make a vertical cut on the lower part of the door fork and knock it off with a few careful taps of your hammer. Then trim the pin off flush with the bottom of the tongue (which is welded to the frame). Do this to the upper and lower hinges. Then trim the upper pin to be slightly shorter than the lower pin. This will make it much easier to re-install the door.

Next, take your die grinder and grind the lip of the pan where it'll interfere with the hinge assy for clearance. I believe this will be the forward lip. Reassemble and realign your doors. Oh yeah, don't forget to squirt some WD40 or some such on the hinges.

To remove your door, simply roll down the window, open the door and lift. To reinstall, align the lower pin on the lower tongue then upper. Make sure the pin is seated all the way down before closing the door.

If you have electric accessories, don't sweat it. Just cut the wires and install a multi wire quick disconnect. My buddy used one from a Honda.

Need mirrors while tooling down the street? That's easy too! Make a bracket to mount some large round truck mirrors to the upper hinge tongue. Or be really simple and get those universal mounts-to-the-fender mirrors from the local Pep Boys. I saw then there for about $10.

Just don't make it complicated!

No they are not. How can the doors be a structural part of the jeep when the hinge pins are made of rollpins? :D

Uh...did you notice the date on this thread? Almost 1 year and 4 months old. Thanks for the history lesson though. :flipoff2: :D
