: Rear axle wider than front?

I know this has come up in discussions before, but I couldn't find it in my endless searches.

OK, so my rear axle (potentially) is a couple of inches wider than the front. What implications are there? I know "normally" the front is wider, but what if it's not?

I run 60" in the front right now and 56" in the arse. I am thinking of going to 62" or even 64" in the rear, what's this really going to affect? Steering, is it going to oversteer more? Or will it understeer? Or nothing at all?

I have a buddy with the D30 up front in his CJ7, and a Ford 9 in the rear, which is about 3" wider than the front on each side (a guess). Works fine. I never woulda noticed except that his rock rails angle outwards toward the back...

if you run a locker in either end it will tend to understeer badly

Actually if the rear axle is wider it will "slow" your steering. You will probably only notice it at slower speeds such as driving through your neighborhood and turning onto streets. I don't have the exact name for it and it is hard to decribe but you can feel it.

It will cause more understeer. you would probavly only notice it "pushing" if you are driving hard on gravel roads, snow, ect.

I am in the process of putting D44s in my flat fender, I put the rear in first and am working on the front. The new rear is 60" wide and the front is still the stock width untill I get the new one done. I forget what the front measures ( I think 52" but I may be wrong) but the only problem I have run into is that the rear tires seen to take a greater beating because they stick so far out past the fronts. Also while trying to drive between two odsticles if the front just barely squeezes through then the rear will have to climb over the top, this may or may not cause a problem.

My rear end was 60" and the front 55"...didn't notice it hardly at all. A couple of times when going around corners at 60-70 I did notice a push...one time it almost put me on the shoulder  I had attributed it to the locker and lack of sway bar, but in retrospect it was probably understeer from the rear axle....or maybe all those things combined :D

I wondered how long it would be before someone commented on that! :flipoff2:

OK, so I'll have understeer, I think I can live with that. Now, back to PnP for that 9" with discs!!
