: bobbing a scout - fuel tank placement?

Ok I posted this question elsewhere and have read their responses, now I thought I would see what the mighty POR has to say about bobbing Scouts. I have a 1971 Scout II, I am planning a SOA front and rear and would like to remove between 8-15" off the back to provide a better departure angle. My concern is I would be into the fuel tank location if I remove this much. But I do not want to put a fuel cell in the bed and give up the space for my dog (very important he has his space) I think I have the other details worked out. Also I do not want a tank smaller than 15 gallons. Picky ain't I! Ideas?

only places i can think of on a scout ii for a fuel cell are:
a) the stock locatoin
b) in the bed
c) under the front seats

Under the rear seat, mounted under the bed by the step up.

Joe, that won't work. Did I mention I will not have a back seat. I will (when completed) have the choice of a bikini top, full top cut down to fit the truck and a half cab. Don't know how often I will run the half cab - But they sure are cute.:flipoff2:

Underneath the bed of the truck, should not effect the placement of a bulk head.

What kind of rear suspension are you planning, not much room left for leaf springs if you remove 16".

Thats why I decided against bobbing mine real short, don't want to use any of the four link type suspensions.

Mine is a Traveler and may be a little different at the rear, but all I can take off of mine without changing spring location is 6".

As for the fuel tank, get a flat rectangular tank, about 8" deep or narrower, mount it on the bed floor and put another floor over it. That way you don't loose any bed space,(just a little depth), and you don't have to worry about a skid for it.

I bobbed my Terra 8" a year ago and went with a 16 gallon JAZ fuel cell behind my bualk head in the bed, its a pain in the ass, so i am building my own 20-25 gallon tank to put back under the bed where the old 33 gallon tank was, hopefully i will build it after the EJS this year, i have to many other thing to do before Moab or i would try to get the tank done. You can cut 16" with out moving you spring hangers, just, they will stick out and you could build them into your bumper.

You know, with a LIFTED scout... there is TONS of room underneath.... I suspect you could even move the STOCK tank forward and not have a problem ever with the axle hitting it.....

Think about it.... SOA, you have now moved the pumpkin 5.5 - 6" AWAY from the bottom of the bed.... Stock tank is only 8" or so deep.........

I would bet that one could EASILY make a simple tank to take up all this new room...

Sticker would be the shocks.... but those could be angled FORWARD (like Kurt/GR8PKN) has his.... not so good for dampening, but helps with wrap....

just musing out loud... mainly because I'm planning the same thing.

I would like to go about 11" to get the same overall length as a Scout 800. I belive there may be a way to move the fuel tank forward and not have it interfer with the axles. Then again bump stops may also work to keet the axle out of the tank. I am planning a leaf spring suspensionBut this may not be too much of a problem since the rear bumper will be tied into the frame.

Can anyone think of any thing else that must be considered in making this kind of a change?

All ideas considered. After a few
some make sense. Seriously - thanks for the ideas.

When you get it all worked out I would be interested in seeing the final specs, because I would like to shorten mine as much as possible without changing to a shorter rear spring.

Not sure if my information will help you much since I am not using original springs or spring locations. My rear springs are off a 1986 full size Bronco. They are about 56" long and 3 inches wide. They are close in length to the factory springs. (Then again the measurements might work well for you). I am moving the springs under the frame. The frame will most likely be welded to my rear bumper as support. The rear shackles will be very close to the bumper. Don't have any rear details worked out yet. Just running possibilitues through my head.
