My turn signal mechanism is loose. Simply trying to turn left or right doesn't work. If I take vice grips to the rod I can turn the signals on and off. The linkage by the steering wheel is loose. What can I do to fix it? Can I buy a new collar and rod that doesn't have any play? Note the yellow box.

Same part number in the 40 and the 55? I bet you
don't need the part that has the electrical connectors,
but rather the mechanical part up near the top. As
I understand it, they are sold separately.

It would be for the 67 FJ45. I haven't found anyone selling the mechanism yet

the turn signal stalk is loose in my FJ45 too. I shimmed it up with a spring/wave washer and its better, but my guess is that your switch itself is too hard to turn. take it off, apart and lube up the pivot points etc. Mine works like new now, after not working... After I cleaned and lubed it, I could grab the shaft by hand and turn the blinkers on and off. much better.

Your problem is in the bottom part of the switch. The aluminum housing where the steel rod enters oxidizes over the years and eventually binds. Disassemble the switch and soak it in a good penatrating oil. Work it back and forth till it's free. If you shear the pin holding the rod in place like I did, use an aluminum rivet to replace it. :-)

Rodney I drilled a small hole in mine and put a screw right through the housing into the steering shaft cover. Worked great, it even happens on the '71 models as well...

Well I dismantled the assembly and cleaned everything up. I found that the switch works great, but the actual joint that attaches to the lever is augered out. I built a shim out of a shiner bottle cap that tightened things up a bit.
Not the best but it works. I used a hammer to flatten the cap, then cut to fit.

here is the switch without the cover

The actual switch that moves left to right...put cleaner there

end where modified bottle cap goes.
