: FJ55 350 engine placement
Junkyard 02-14-2005, 08:19 AM I'm going with 350/TH350/205 in an FJ55. I've done a search here and on IH8Mud & can't find any info on motor-mount placement.
Ya, ya, I know - leave a couple inches of room between the firewall & the engine/distributor.
Just trying to get a ballpark from a common reference point on the frame (shock tower?) as to where to hang this sucker without actually swinging the whole drivetrain up & in.
Any help??

are you just looking for a rough idea, or are you looking to weld in the mounts without having to swing the engine in?
I would consider fitting the engine in to get a good location. I really think there are too many variable with a v8 conversion to beable to just measure and go, without actually fitting it.
Junkyard 02-14-2005, 08:58 AM Just looking for a rough idea. I'm not going to do any welding without swinging in the motor/trans/t-case.
I know other folks must have done 350 swaps in 55's, but my old AA handbook from many moons ago only has info for FJ40's & most other info on the interweb is for 40's too.
I was just wondering if there were any general guidelines that other folks have used when doing motor swaps into 55's.

cruiserbrett 02-14-2005, 09:11 AM well, IIRC, the v8 conversion on my old FJ55 which was too far forward, had the through bolts for the motor mounts going through the frame interfere wiht the shock tower on the pass side. So, thats not too much help but they should be back a bit from the passenger side shock tower.
texican 02-14-2005, 11:07 AM I got one at the shop now, I can take some pix and measurements off of it.......currently no trans, soon to have a T350 in it.

Thanks!!!

GreenPig 02-14-2005, 02:46 PM My engine was pushed back as far as possible in my swap, and if left me about inch of clearance between the heads and the firewall (the part that wraps kinda around the F/2F). The ebrake mount and valve cover was only 1/8" apart. Though tight, it left me with plenty of room for the distributor, and plenty of room up front.

texican 02-14-2005, 03:54 PM I was looking, it appears as if the front of the engine, not counting the W/P but the block is dead in line with the seam between the 3rd and the axle housing.....
texican 02-14-2005, 03:55 PM I assume the battery box is in the stock location, if so you could use this for alignment........
texican 02-14-2005, 03:56 PM How about a shot of the sweet pig?

Dang Texican!
I think it needs one more spacer to get the fan juuuuust right..... :shaking:
I have a 55 with a 350/350/3speed case and the AA motor mounts verticle bolt is even with where the old steering box mated to the shock tower. This was done by the PPO, and makes for a steep front DS now that its spring over... FWIW.

I did not create this truck, in fact have not even touched it yet, just offering up the pix he wanted.......this one will never be SOA, so I reckon the front shaft will be fine.....

Junkyard 02-15-2005, 07:05 AM Thanks guys!
I've done a couple 40's but never a 55 & I just wanted to see height-wise & how far forward/back the "typical" engine conversion was done.
That's exactly what I was looking for. Just a ballpark.
