: Question for the Carburetor Pros . . .

Here's the deal . . . My '68 with a 225 V6/TH400 started running really shitty . . . backfiring thru the carb (Rochester 2GC) - wouldn't idle right.

Soooo, I ripped everything out of and replaced the points, plugs, wires, distributor cap and while I was at it I put a kit in the carb. Now, it stumbles and sometimes pops back once thru the carb when I accelerate. I got a good idle and it runs well at hiway speeds but it acts like it's leaning out. Everything is set to spec - I got about a 2% dwell variation which shouldn't be a problem. Everything seems to be functioning as designed - The accellerator pump pumps - The auto choke chokes and unloads when it gets up to temp - No apparent vacuum leaks.

Here's the second problem . . . I haven't messed with a carb for 10 or 12 years and I forgot everything I didn't want to know about them in the first place.

Who of you out there has the answer to this question of vast importance?

(Wrong rig - The Jeep has a 225 V6)

Lean can cause a intake backfire, so can timing...a vacuum gauge might tell something
Did you get it real clean?
weak fuel pump ? possible,
could the float level could be low ?
It's hard to say if the first backfires screwed up the carb, and caused the idle probs.

FWIW...
Ditch the points...I finally broke down and put in HEI 2 yrs. ago...must have been worth a 10% HP gain.

Check out the vacum advance and the centrifical advance.
.The vac advance should hold a vacum and the plate in the dist will move also. also the cent advance weights should sling out and retract when you twist the shaft. You may also check total advance with a timing light it will tell you if if they both work if you know what the specs are. Most total advance is about 32. Maybe this will help

Yep, running lean. Plugged filter? Plugged screen on the pickup pipe in the tank? Hole in a hose on the suction side of the pump? Weak or dying pump, as dirtrod suggested?

sounds like a simple adjustment of the accelerator pump would fix it. it is probably pumping to late.
