: Spontaneous ABS engagement
Serious One 02-14-2005, 07:42 PM First time for this, totally weird ABS behavior today.
Driving down the road I hear the ABS pump start to pulsate like it does when it tries to engage, even if I don't have my foot on the brake.
Also, when I *DO* have my foot on the brake it engages the ABS even if the wheels aren't slipping or locking up. It does eventually stop, and the brakes behave normally.
The ABS and traction control light turn on after a while, and the ABS quits acting erratically, probably because it's in non-working mode.
Anyway, thinking about when I can do my non-ABS swap, and what might be causing this weird behavior.
Anyone else ever hear of this?
DieLucas! 02-14-2005, 08:02 PM I had weird stuff like this happen with my Disco. A seemingly over-active ABS pump, ABS light would come on often, typically after hitting a large bump. I have thoughts about why, but none that would seem even remotely logical...I entertain them only because it was a Rover and damn near anything was possible.
Black Mustache 02-14-2005, 08:09 PM ditto with DieLucas' experience in my old lady's DII. happened 3 or 4 times. took it to dealer (WARRANTY, people... before you get your panties in a wad :flipoff2:). The dum-dum drove it around and said it was operating normally. i told him i'd hunt down him and his family one by one if he was pulling my chain and it magically stopped.
Serious One 02-14-2005, 08:18 PM very interesting....
Cherub Rock 02-14-2005, 08:57 PM same prob with a 96 Disco.
turned out to be a bad ABS sensor on the LF wheel. Don't have the cash to fix, and I never liked the way my truck's ABS [didn't] grab, so I just pulled the fuse.
jpenrose 02-14-2005, 09:32 PM Mike,
My 95 does the exact same thing, has been for the last few months, one of the last straws. I was guessing one of the sensors also and haven't had any time/interest to mess with it. I printed off your non-ABS post the other day so I can plan to find parts for the RR I am buying.
Good luck, I will keep track of what you find also, maybe I can fix mine before I sell it.
evilfij 02-14-2005, 09:38 PM DUDE, its an f'ion ABS senson.
Commonist failure on the planet

Serious One 02-14-2005, 09:52 PM Well, I don't want to have to rip it out until it's really time, so I might actually mess around with trying to figure out how to solve this.
Thought about removing the sensors and cleaning them with contact cleaner and reinstalling.
Other than that, I don't have any extra sensors laying around (I think I gave them to someone who needed some a while ago), so if I can't get that to work I'll start digging out my parts.
:(
evilfij 02-14-2005, 09:54 PM You can disconnect all the sensors.
Not sure if there is a sensor fuse on a RRC like on a disco.
Do it soon, RRCs do not like brake issues sticking around. They get pssy and pack in.
Todd Nash 02-14-2005, 10:12 PM Evilfij is right. This is typical crap for a Disco.
Just pull the ABS fuse under the dash. At least until you get a new sensor or 2.
I pulled mine 10K miles ago, no troubles yet.

No fuse. It's all or nothing with the RRC ABS. :(
madcowdungbeetle 02-14-2005, 10:48 PM I had mine do the exact same thing...
I found the power lead to the ABS pump and disconnected it.
Never had a problem since (2 years). Seemed like the brakes felt a whole lot better too once I disconnected the ABS.

+1
How many of you guys are satisified with your ABS while wheeling?
I couldn't stand it... much grippier when I can lock up the wheels. (In permitting conditions of course...)

word up- there is a fuse, but if you pull it... yeeeeehaw!
i found that one the hard way on a friends 92.

Eggsactly! The RRC and the Disco ABS systems are completely different, terrifyingly different. With a Disco, just wait, it'll fail and your troubles will go away. With a Classic, you just won't be able to stop.
Mike, have you thought about, oh, say maybe reading the codes to find out what's wrong with your ABS? I dunno, but it might be a good way to find out what's wrong, but that's just my logical troubleshooting mentality :flipoff2:
evilfij 02-15-2005, 06:22 AM If you manually disconnect each sensor from the harness you keep power but you disable ABS.

Dude, that's more work than doing the non-ABS conversion. :D

This is exactly what I did. I am surprised that you don't remember that Mike as if I remember correctly you were the one that gave me the idea when I was having all the issues with the brakes on the LWB. The only other thing I did was remove the ABS bulb from the dash so that light was not on all the time. Now I have normal non-ABS brakes and has been this way for over two years.

I thought it was two years ago, but it has only been a year. No issues on or off road. I actually prefer the non-ABS brakes off road.
Serious One 02-15-2005, 01:08 PM I am surprised that you don't remember that Mike.
There's lots of stuff I say that I don't remember...just ask my wife.

Yeah, same with mine. Thanks for the help with my brakes. Now use your own advise and disconnect those sensors and be done with it!!! :D :D
