: Engine cutting out intermittently....

Hey guys...

long time no talk... sorry to come back with a problem... but here it goes...

1990 Full Size Chevy Blazer... 350 TBI....

I'm driving yesterday and the brake light and fasten seat belt light came on... I was like... hmm, that's weird... then the engine cut off..... lights went out... no starter.. nothing... then, they came back on along with the service engine soon like (just like when you turn your key on) and then I popped it into neutral as I was coasting and it started right up.... The brake light flashed on really quick earlier yesterday but demonstrated no tangible symptoms as far as performance goes.... But later on in the day is when the motor just cut out...

I checked the battery terminals... the positive (side posts) was just a tad loose... I can't get that sucker to snug super super tight like the negative... it had a little bit of green corrosion when I took it off... nothing major, but I've already cleaned that.

Battery ground to engine block looks good. Although a mechanic back in the day grounded the coolant temp sensor ground in the same spot as the battery ground (years ago). The coolant temp sensor was originally grounded on the thermostat housing. I don't think this should make a difference, but what do you guys think?

A couple months ago the brake light was flashing what seemed to be a code. 8 flashes, pause, 8 flashes, pause... that went away by itself... who knows???

Any other suggestions?? Could the computer be going bad??? Any other grounds I should check?? There are a couple of them on the core support as well that checked out good...

Thanks for your help, fellas!!!

Sal

P.S...... FUEL GAUGE ACTS FUNKY ONCE IN A LONG WHILE... tells me I'm topped off when I know I'm not, or starts dancing!! once in a long while it does this... my car's all fucked up and on crack.. hahah

ONE MORE OBSERVATION I JUST MADE...

brake light comes on for split second... along with the beeeeep that tells you to put your seat belt on... and SPEEDOMETER went crazy.... all happened in a split second

sounds like it could be the frame to engine ground. its effecting alot of systems at once.
your ground should be on the low side of the alternator and is mounnted on a stud, the stud is most likely corroded and creating a short. its got enough amperage to burn accrossed and make contact once in a while, but I would be hunting for burned spots on the cable where they hook to stuff.

yea, id check/ replace some grounds. the speedo in a 90 blazer is still cale operated, so if thats bouncing around thats odd in itself. as for the fuel gauge, thats not connected to or controlled by the ecm in any way, so if thats actin up too, then it almost sounds like a ground. id pull alll the grounds u can find, wire brush them and inspect the cables for damage, maybe buy some wire and make a few new grounds.

thanks guys.... I will try that for sure.......

do you guys think it could be a bad ignition switch too?? funny thing happened... I was test driving it.... running perfectly... I stopped.... and... as soon as I put it in park the truck shut off I mean RIGHT when I put it in park........... headlights and brake lights still worked..... but it seemed like the car was "dead".... I'd turn the key and no service engine light.... no brake light no starter.... nothing..... even the hazards went out... that was really weirdI kept trying for about 10 minutes..... nothing... sat there thinking with the key in the on position, I'm right outside the car, then all of a sudden the lights (service engine and brake) came back on and I cranker her over like if nothing happened.........

thanks so much for your time, fellas.......

I have seen current seek alternate routes, it could be using the colume as one. as soon as you shifted it could have broken the link, start with body to chassie ground and frame to engine grounds.

The other things you should check are the connections at the starter, as the fuseable links are there, and i have seen the pos batt cable come loose on these trucks and cause exactly this symptom. also check the pass firewall and insp the junction block that is there for loose terminals, etc. good luck, let us know!!
