does the tranny and t-case need to be removed to replace the clutch in a 71 fj40? any tips or suggestions? i changed the clutch in my samurai in about an hour. by looking at my toyota haynes manual i'm thinking it may take a bit longer for the fj40! good tech sites and any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

cruisers are just like any other car when it comes to replacing the clutch. you can either pull the trans or the engine; whatever you think is easier. as a rule of thumb, it's always better and easier to pull the trans (leave the t-case attached when you yank the trans).
what kind of rookie question is that anyways?
if you just did a clutch on a sami you ought to know!:rasta:

like i said the haynes manual makes it look more difficult. they say that you need to remove the seats, gas tank, and a part of the floor to do it. my brother is buying the fj40, the clutch is bad. don't know jack about them and that's why i ask such a "rookie" question. thanks for the info.

You can change the clutch either way I have done it both ways but removing the seats and removing the hump is much easier in my opionion it gives you easy access to everything and all in all it dosen't take any longer I was able to do my last change out by myself with an SM420 and the the three speed trans. case from the top I just rigged it to the rollbar for the removal and the install, with my buddies it took three people from the bottom to just get the tranny lined up sence he decided not to remove the hump I think the next time he might change his mind.

pulling the hump out will definetly save your back. i normally use a come-along mounted to the roll bar to lower and raise the trans; makes it a lot easier when you go to bolt it back in. 1 person can do it that way.:smokin:

Thats how I've been doing it ever since I was a kid, makes it real easy! You should be able to do it in 2 or 3 hours easy.

A tranny jack works good also. Its easier, in my experience to remove the tranny and xfer case together. I have changed the clutch both ways, either way it takes time, but you have a bunch more crap to disconnect if you take out the engine. If its the stock engine, that monster is heavy, my cherry picker was screaming! :skull:
