: Compatibility of Salisbury and D60 axles?

Well I have been looking into doing the toy axle conversion on my 109. I do has the rear salisbury axle but plan on doing the toy conversion for the front.

When doing the toy conversion, I need to get the same gear ratios for the front and rear axle (duh). I am thinking 4.88 since that is readily available for the toyota differential.

I noticed that I can get a Dana 60 R&P in 4.88. Can this R&P fit my salisbury axle? Any other components I need to look into to beef up the salisbury even more?

I do plan to re-work the front axle, and go through the rear axle during the same time. BTW, the rear axle does have a detroit locker in it. I figure I'll go ahead and buy new axle shafts to be on the safe side.

Any other suggestions for beefing up the salisbury?

I,m probly wrong here but I done some simaler research on one these once before and going via bearing sizes for the pinions , I would say the 60 gear set might not fit , due to the pinion being smaller for the rover at the spline end then most 60s , did you do a search on it ? Maybe you might have to use d60 pinion bearings and seal and drive flange ,

mmm is a good question.

To be honest, I really don't know where to look. I'll search pirate, but I suck at the internet so I don't know how much information that'll yield.

Yes you can run d60 gears in a salsbury case, you do have to convert the pinion bearing seal and flange. You can upgrade to 30 or 35 spline shafts while you are at it. Discs and a selectable locker. Shave the diff (I think blue torch is making diff covers for shaved D60s) Keep throwing money at it and you'll have a killer rear end. It will probably stand up to your 2.25 and 32s :flipoff2: even with the flame paint job :flipoff2:

Hey! Don't knock the paint job Fawker!! :mad3:

:flipoff2:

I did a search and it reinforces what Ike said, I need to swap out the said componenets.

Oh, and forget a selectable locker for the rear. Thats not how I roll.

I am working on how to get some disc brakes both front and rear. I have been studying the Zuess website and their conversion. Looks like I can just do some cyphering in autoCAD and make the plates. Then find get some rover disc brakes and calipers. The expensive part will be getting the machining done. In my search there was a lot of talk about using a grey market hub and spindles to convert it over to disc brakes. That'll probably be better and cheaper. I need to do more research on that, see what pops up.

Exactly what Ike said on the D60 compatability. For the detroit (if you want to keep it...), you can buy the 30 or 35 spline detroit D60 side gears and then fit upgraded axles. For 30 spline axles you will have to bore the spindles 0.020" or for the 35 spline you will have to buy new spindles from macnamara.

For the discs, there are 2 ways, depending on whether you have a lathe handy...

(1) Early Range Rover spindles, hubs, discs and bearings - then you just have to make 4 caliper brackets for whichever calipers you choose to use. You will also need 5-bolt drive flanges.

(2) Machine the ribs off the back of a set of SIII hubs and drill & tap them to bolt a Range Rover / 110 rotors to them. Then you need to make 4 caliper brackets as before.

The rear brackets are fairly straightforward. For the front, the best method is to make 2 brackets (one top one bottom), that attach to the swivel-pin bolts and each end of the caliper (where the 2 halves of a RR caliper join).

Hi
If its of any help I fitted a 4.1 from a D60 into a salisbury, needed a new flange end pinion brg, use LR Ser III preload shims, and modify the D60 flange to register the LR prop shaft. LR flange will not fit the D60 pinion spline, so a friend with a lathe is needed. Need to drill out the carrier bolt holes to 1/2" as they are only 12mm. Otherwise easy peasy.

Sorry to Hijack, but I have a related question,

has anyone ever fitted a D60 ARB locker to a salisbury - and used the 4.7 ring gear?

If the the D60 has slightly larger R&P bolts than the Sals, you would need to get special "stepped" bolts???

Anyone know if Series III Salisburies had 1/2" bolts the same as D60's? My Landies are half way around the world from me at the moment so I can't go and measure.

All Sals use Metric Cap bolts near as I can remember
