I use the Garmin III plus also, very good unit. The new V is supposed to be even better. Lots of accessories and support.

I have a Garmin eMap, you can download maps to it for a LOT of detail. Cost $230 at Fry's. Works very well, i've used it on many night runs and I also use it for a speedometer:D (not that my junk goes over 40mph anyway...)

If you already have a windows CE unit or a laptop there are is a DGPS unit on the market for around $400.00. Comes with a an antenna that slides into the top of a CE or into the side of a laptop and also an external antenna. Also has some type of mapping software. Maptech Terrain Navigator is some pretty neat software. Has all the forest service roads and elevations on it and is able to run in 3-D mode. I used it in the BLack Hills last year, pretty slick!
