: generic hub seal numbers?? ready to install that spindle
androbus 02-16-2005, 11:55 PM I finally borrowed the cutting torch and cut out the offending inner bearing race with only slight damage to teh spindle(photos shortly..can't upload from camera for some reason) damn gas-axe cuts good! :D
as I pulled off the old spindle i realized I did NOT order the two different seals when I bought teh bearings and washers....or the paper gasket either...and our dealer doesn't usually stock much of anything for some reason..
anyone have the generic numbers so I can get them locally instead of having to wait for parts to be shipped? I really need to finihs tomorrow(we are borrowing a car for her now, but need to get it back soon...)
thanks!

the hub seal
National oil seal 410694
Napa should have it.

PTSchram 02-17-2005, 05:38 AM If napa doesn't have that seal, take your old one in with you for them to match up. There are dimensions on the outside of the seal. They are often in metric units, but... they are almost always direct imperial dimensions.

good idea....BUT remember I used the cutting torch!
so I can't do that for the large seal as it caught fire, and i just let it burn as I was busy cutting metal....dang!

cool! but which one is this? the large one on the hub right?
but what about the one inside the spindle that seals on the axle-shaft?

I think it's this one that Briggs said: National oil seal 410694

Yes, the national # is the seal that goes into the hub and seals against the stub axle.
The 'little one' that goes in the housing itself and seals against the axle is optional if grease your wheel bearings & CV's. I opted out, so I have no idea what the # is.
The gasket maker is to replace anything that was paper.

aha! ok!
well I called the dealer and found they have the bestest price around for the seal, so picked up it and the paper gasket just because...
the inner seal on the stub axle I got from jason is in good shape, so will use it as it is.
I just finished cleaning up mating surfaces installed paper gasket et all and am about to torque the stub bolts down, but can't find teh spec...grr!! damn euro factory manuals...maybe I'll look it up in the disco manual? hmmm!
I just knocked out the old races from the hub, and am about to grind one smaller on the outside radius to become PAD part # 28-7 (hub bearing race installation tool) but now can't for teh life of me find the new bearing sets! ARRRGH!!

red90rover 02-17-2005, 06:20 PM There is no good reason to have the seal on the CV stub shaft. Make sure you switch to the earlier style hub seal as it seals better.

The hub seal at the dealer is a single lip, the # I gave you is better as it is a double lip. The gasket maker seals better than paper, and is more condusive for trail repairs in case you blow a CV/axle.
Do yourself a favor and take back the stuff you bought and go to Napa.

now you say so!
too late! I already have test driven things! :flipoff2:
...and yes it works! :grinpimp: I'm not a complete idjit...just partial...
now trying to remember if it was a single or double lip?? I think it may have been double!
now my question is how long do I wait before opening up and re-tightening if needed? I figure on saturday/sunday I could do that and for future PTism I will remove the left sice and pack teh shit outa it as well just in case!
than maybe check the fronts in a while.

yeah! kinda figured that.....what is the deal with the wear marks on it? what abuse has it had in the past?
I should have re-taken the images of the parts...inclucing the hub! it has issues inside. it looks like there was a problem before from what I saw...so will look for a replacement just in case!(need to retake as there are "issues" witht eh caera to computer hook-up! not sure if it's the fz-20 or the computer...or the cable...keeps getting the unplugged devise error message even though it is not unplugged...and it erased all on teh memory card...where is my warrenty paperwork...grr! shoulda bought a Nikon! damn!)
Paul(can't complain as it's better than what I took off!!..especially since my torch skillz ended up with a deep gash into the stub-axle when removing the welded on bearing-race...)

:D
EDIT: Rear axle housing is on DieLucas!s' RRC, steering box is on Schram's truck, lesse...I'll think of more. Oh yeah, the roof is also on DieLucas' truck, as is the EFI.
