Anyone put a gas tank under the rear of an older CJ5? My 63 has it under the seat, and I'm just too damn tall to be sitting on it! I was wondering if there's a certain tank from a different year that easily fits in the rear of this jeep? And can I still use the stock filling location that's right by the driver door or do I have to move it out back?
Any input on this would be appreciated.

I had a 17ga. tank made for the rear by Custom Gastanks in Laverne, Ca.
I cut out the "K" member and it fit in there real nice and left plenty of ground clearance.

I had the same problem and put in a 16 gallon Summit fuel cell (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=fuel+cell+16&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp), no foam.

I was kinda hoping to not have to lose anymore bed room. I use this for hunting and stuff too and space is already at a premium, but of course I don't want it hanging down low so guess I'll probably have to go that route. Yours looks clean and like it doesn't stick up too far anyway. Are you going to build something to protect the top so you can stack stuff on it?
BTW, nice looking tunnel up front.

To put one in back like a newer CJ you will have to cut out that crossmember that goes from the back bumper forward at a 45*. Once that is gone you can get a replacment take for a 78 to 86 CJ, drop it in and make some mounts for it. I like that year because it uses a 1" inlet and 3/4" vent so they are easy to run rather than some 2" hose.

Then do you rebuild some type of crossmember for the frame, or is it fine without it? Thanks for the input on the tank type too.
You don't really need that K-member. It was originally intended for Jeeps used for a variety of purposes like trenchers, farm implements, etc. and provided an attachment point. The frames of '70.5 and '71 CJ's are exactly the same other than the K-member as Jeep started putting the tanks in the rear in mid-70.
