: EB snorkel ideas
MattyB4x4 02-17-2005, 11:16 AM Well, I am just goofing around thinking of some ideas for a snorkel. I don't really want one that sticks up out of the fender well or anything. Let me know if this sounds like it will work....
1. Remove stock air filter and make an air box with a tight/removable seal on carb.
2. Either use dryer (metal) tube or black plastic drainage pipe and run it through the firewall on passanger side...maybe in place of glovebox.
3. Put cone filter or something on the interior of the firewall insead on top of motor....oh ya...cool air too haha.
Let me know what you guys think.
tsmall07 02-17-2005, 11:33 AM so the air intake would be inside the truck?
is it open top or closed?
Felix4x4 02-17-2005, 11:49 AM That would work but why do you want a snorkel in the first place? If you are planning on going into deep water the cab of an Early Bronco will fill up just as fast as the engine compartment. So you will want it above that plane. Unless you are just wanting to keep splashing water away from the air filter. If this is the case putting it under the dash would work very well.
MattyB4x4 02-18-2005, 09:00 PM Thats pretty much it, keep splashing down. I'm in Georgia and there is tons of mud here. Just dont really want any spray gettin sucked in...It has a hard top, but it would be under the dash so even in the rain it'd be ok.
Delta4x4 02-18-2005, 09:09 PM I think it would be noisey and annoying in the cab...
MattyB4x4 02-18-2005, 10:21 PM you think it would be that loud?...i dont really wanna cut into a fender unless I have to
Bandit0 02-19-2005, 10:27 AM *good grief* you'll drown your distributor long before you start sucking water (or mud) into the intake... if you are doing this to keep the filter from getting clogged up with dust or mud then go get a cheap clothes dryer vent hose, some pipe clamps,a cone filter, and cut nice little hole in your fire wall. As long you don't limit intake of air into the filter, a stock carb won't create enough vacuum to make a loud sucking nose
MattyB4x4 02-19-2005, 03:16 PM the only reason I am doing this is to keep splashing down. I dont plan on running in water that high, but just don't wanna splash the filter. I know about the distributor...and i'd toast an alternator if I went in that deep. I also plan on running about a 550cfm 4 barrel...not sure of brand yet.
45acp 02-20-2005, 04:34 AM It is quite loud having it inside the cab, especially with the top on.
Daddy4zack 02-20-2005, 12:50 PM Backfire's would be cool!! Maybe a new way to heat the cab..
Skedar2 02-20-2005, 12:54 PM It is quite loud having it inside the cab, especially with the top on.
I agree with 45acp it would be quite loud in the cab, hell even my snowmobiles carbs have silencers on them, when you take them off the sucking sound is very noticeable. And yes a backfire would be a very exciting experience for the person sitting passenger with this setup.
45acp 02-20-2005, 01:54 PM Well, loud is a relative term. A buddy of mine has his run in were the heater used to be. Has the MAF sensor basically bolted to the firewall and a big clamp on filter bolted on inside the cab right above the passengers feet. To him its liveable- to me its too loud to ride in more than 10 minutes at a time. At idle its not even noticable but every time the throttle blade opens you can kiss conversation inside goodbye. Depends on your perspective i guess.

Tried the industrial grade flex hose(like dryer hose), it flexes and compresses when you put er to the wood :( Gotta have hard pipe
MattyB4x4 02-20-2005, 08:08 PM well, sounds like it'll be too loud...well, annoying. I'll think of some other way other then cutting up a fender...well, i might even end up doin that in the end. Thanks for the help guys
FordFascist 02-20-2005, 11:44 PM Put it back to stock. The stock filter and element are enclosed and have a tube that connects to an air tube that goes just behind the passenger side headlight. I actually have an extra duct sitting here in my garage.
tsmall07 03-15-2005, 07:45 PM putting it through where the heat goes would be aight probibly, but i'm not one for cutting huge holes in the firewall. just feels like that thing should be as in tact as possible. you know, to keep fires out and such. :shaking:
braxton357 03-15-2005, 10:09 PM If you "just want to keep splashing down" then a cone filter would be a dumb idea. I put a typical drop base performance filter on mine, then later switched back to the stock filter housing...it's about your best bet for what you want to do, and by the time the water gets that high you're going to have a lot more things to worry about.
welndmn 03-16-2005, 07:58 AM Your not ganing much, just run the stock sealed air cleaner and make the intake of suck from the back.
ohh My friend had a 502 in his TLC, the snorke was at the passenger head, When he gased it, i thought I was going to be sucked through it.
MattyB4x4 03-16-2005, 10:09 AM haha, i'm not doing the snorkel through the firewall...i'm just making it so the intake sucks from the back of the motor. that should be all I will ever need. thanks guys
