Hi

I have a 97 5.7 Vortec motor (L31) TH350 Atlass II combo in a buggy that I am building. Currently I do not have an ECM to run the motor.

What is my best option to run this setup? Do I go to an aftermarket ECM or do I try and source a GM ECM.

If I go the GM ECM route what are the implications regarding the transmission. I understand that the GM ECM also controls the transmisssion and if that has been changed to a TH350 will this cause error problem with the ECM. Also is it easy to do away with the emmision controls and not upset the ECM?

I am based in South Africa so it is not an option to go the the local junk jard and buy the ECM and harness. They are simply not available here so will need to find one from the USA.

If an aftermarket system is easier/better, what system is recommended?

In this year they were called a PCM, because they now control the entire drivetrain. Yes the PCM now shifts the transmission. If the motor is stock I'd go the GM route. Contact Formato's fasterproms, or any of this type of business. They can mask any error codes of changes you may have made. Also, they can turn your fans on/off when you want.....
