I just scored two FJ40 parts rigs (a 70 and a 72) for $50. They have no drive trains or engines and had been sitting in a cow pasture for the past three years. When I got them home I found a ton of extra parts in the back of one. Needless to say, there was a hell of a lot more than $50 worth on new Toyota parts. Anyway my question is this, currently my 74 4sp t-case is cracked and the 72 I just got has what I think is a three sp trany and t-case bolted together in the spare parts pile. Can I take the 3sp t-case and just bolt it to my 4sp trany? or do I need to do some mods? Thanks for any help you guys can give.

nope, input gear on the tcase is wrong. Although you can buy the input gear from one of the parts places. Man a Free I think sells them..

Could I just use the imput gear from my 4sp case in the 3sp case? or if need be, could I just put the 4sp innards in the 3spd case? I just bought a house and am paying for my wedding so i am just trying to keep this as cheap as possible.

Just sell your 3 speed transfer case and get a 4 speed transfer case. You may come out a little ahead as 3sp cases are desirable and maybe a little harder to come by.

You need to spend a little time counting teeth. :D
The 1974 input gear is a transition gear. The TC has the 3-speed internals but the input gear matches the 16-spline output on the tranny.
Basically, count the teeth on the input gear, the outer teeth. If they are the same number and the same "pitch"/"angle" as the input gear of the 72 case, then you can install the 72 case behind your 4-speed and use the 74 input gear.
Note: Not all 74's had this....mostly early ones. And you won't know until it's out and can count things.

Ditto on woodies comments. If this is going to be a crawler the lower gear ratio on the 3 speed transfercase would be desireable if the splines are compatable with your 4 speed tranny, as the two cruisers are early 70's hopefully the transfer case came from on of them. If it did the combo might possibly work. If I were you I would take the pile of parts down to Marlin and let him make it work for you. He helped me out! :fj:

Thanks Woody. Hopefully I will get some time in the near future I will get a chance to make it down to my parents house and pull the tranny from the t-case on my rig and pull the 3 sp tranny and t-case apart. I can't wait until I move into my new house and can have my rig and parts close to me. PITA having them 100 miles away.
