: Smog Q's in WA
Daren Rabago 02-16-2002, 09:46 PM Ok, my zuk has been down for about a year, and now we're putting it back together, SOA, YJ's and S/R are done . Now it's time to get it licensed, and it failed Emission sniff test. In WA, all they do is a cruise and idle sniff test, on a pass fail type deal. It failed with high CO at 2500 RPM. Everything else passed fine. It's an 88, stock 1.3 with K&N, nothing else done to the engine or carb.
According to the little sheet they gave me that says I'm hosed, they have a pamphlet that says high CO means engine running rich.
Sooo.... Any suggestions? I've heard about different things to sneak through, like re-routing pcv tube, or pulling air filter out before the test. I don't know if any of these really will make enough of a difference, but I'm going to try them. Also thinking regular tune up, and O2 sensor. Any other tips before I start?
I can't find any vacuum leaks, and other than the occassional backfire on hard compression (timing?) it runs fine. Any help would be appreciated. DR.
moto261 02-17-2002, 03:42 PM yea you could move to some where they dont require you to have that stupid test done or just find some one that lives there and registrater using there add.:) any how there is a place you can go to that i have hurd of and you can pay them to try to get it to pass and if they cant you get a waver to get it licened any how good luck and happy testing

Daren Rabago 02-17-2002, 09:14 PM Well, tune up is done, and tomorrow will try to run through smog again. Thanks for the invite though, but I won't be able to make it. Gonna try to get the clutch in on Sat, and then do pinion brgs, and then must introduce Mr. Fender to Mr. Sawzall. Found that with the S/R, the nose dive brings the tire to the fender contact. It's either that, or try to move the axle forward. Haven't decied which. Will be looking for you guys on the trail since all my Jeep friends have shunned me now that the Zuk is in the garage and being worked on. The CJ is just getting cobwebs. :D

suzuki w/the HEAT 02-20-2002, 12:39 AM how high is co? and no the fancy tune up won't bring down co at all. unless the air filter was dirty. there are many solutions to this so let me know what the readings are and i'll help u out. i own a smog shop in cali and i know what a hassle it is when your truck dosn't pass. i think that is why i got my smog lic. 12yrs ago. it's amaziing but i havn't had any problems with smog since. if you can't beat them join them. just email me because sometimes i don't get back to this board
EMIEVEL 02-20-2002, 01:44 AM Daren, you bummed me out! I'm moving to Ellensberg and was hoping my vehicles wouldn't have to pass a smog test anymore. Do they have a visual inpection as well; like checking for headers and aftermarket air intake systems? I also wonder if they have to meet the same requirements as in CA. Heat, do know the answer to that one?
You should be able to lean it out. I live in Everett and my crew cab has to be turned all the way down (hard to keep it running) before it will pass (due to the carb thats on it). There is a little tune up place on HWY 99 that I take the crew cab to make it pass. Wa. is getting a new company to run the Emission stations in April (I think). From what I was reading the tests will be changing.

Daren Rabago 02-20-2002, 12:23 PM Well, it needed the tune up anyway. Thanks for the info Heat, and Evil, Ellensburg does not have emisssions at all. It's based on counties in major metro areas.
By the high CO content, the next shop I talked to said that the carb is probably shot, possibly due to leaking top plate. Now..... I also have either access to another good used hitachi carb, with recent rebuild (last year), or to a Weber 32/36 from a toyota 22r. Anybody know if that Yota carb can be adapted to the 1.3, or would the Hitachi stock be my best bet. Napa can't get the rebuild kits anymore. More info please!!!!

suzuki w/the HEAT 02-21-2002, 07:53 PM header is legal in cali as long as it has the o2 installed. what are the readings on co? don't put anything else except the stock carb because i think they have a visual inspection in wa. let me know what the co is and i'll tell you how to fix it.
Daren Rabago 02-25-2002, 08:45 PM Well, found some interesting things in the emissions hunt. The CO was 6%, allowable for an 88 was 1.5%. The mixture control solenoid was not working, and there was some top gasket leakage, and also a high float level. (Had a carburator expert that also used to own 'Zuk's over.) Now I have to make a wrench to get the lower baseplate off and finish the rebuild. Found another carb that had been sitting for a year with a working solenoid, and we're going to town. Even found a rebuild kit, and will be having tons of fun this week.....Oh well, at least it should run better, and maybe even get better gas mileage. Hmmm.... trying to get carb, clutch, fender clearance, new shock towers, 4.16 kit all before Moab... Maybe should just take the jeep:flipoff2:
