: CRCA Ultimate Rock Challenge
RocKrawler 02-16-2002, 10:03 PM Just a litle heads up... The CRCA ( California Rock Crawling Association ) had its first event at the Wooden Nickel Ranch ( Private property )in Menifee, CA today. The event was a success, and they plan to do a 4 event series there beginning September this year. Classes are Stock ( 35" or smaller, single t-case & wheelbase ) and Modified ( Unlimited drivetrain, Max 40" MEASURED tire size ). Stock class was won by a Samurai, beating out another Samurai, a TJ, 2 scouts, and a few CJ5's. Modified was won by Chris Geiger from All Pro, beating out many well setup Jeeps, including Ron Schnieder from ORGS and others ( The fullsize Wagoneer was funny, didnt make it up the first hill, but tried like crazy.) The course was short but tough, and it is a timed event.. fastest wins, with 15 & 30 second penalties for touching & knocking down flags, respectively. Although a relatively small event, it was a lot of fun for participants & spectators. Event entry is only $25, and prizes are awarded along with nice trophys. Pictures and a full story are going to be posted on the RockCrawler.com website soon. Its a cool ( & Cheap ) way to get into competition. Just thought I'd post for anyone interested.

mrblaine 02-17-2002, 11:26 AM The event is a great way for the stock guys to get your feet wet and have a great time. Nicely run, great venue, and a ton of very nice people.
My thanks to the Wooden Nickle Ranch for hosting this event. We had a great time.
Congratulations to Chris Geiger on his win.
If you weren't there, you missed a speed run through the course by Ron that was incredible. He halved the time of the next best on his first run with about 2 minutes and 25 seconds on the clock. Not really possible, but he did it anyway.
Geiger had a great run with only a couple of small hang-ups and ran about 4 minutes and 20 some odd seconds as a comparison.
I got a huge kick out of the stock guys. Just too much fun
watching them.
edit- Just out of curiosity, anyone consider teaching them how to measure a tire?
I have never heard of measuring from top to bottom before. Basically you can run any tire that you can air down to under 40 inches. It would seem you should measure horizontally like most everyone else does.
Chris Geiger 02-17-2002, 03:25 PM Here are a few pics from the event....
Thanks to Terry Baker for spotting me!

RocKrawler 02-17-2002, 08:00 PM Hmm.. the link worked for me. The event was kewl, but mrblaine was right, the dude with the black flatfender had 39's in front, and 44's in back, but because he took all the air out, they measured 38" with the tape. Pretty lame if you ask me, but he didnt make it through "the kitchen" ( called that because many competitors had their ass served to them there ). It was pretty funny having fans yell " hit it with your purse" when he got stuck!
The Samurai was a sweet run.. the driver had absolutely NO fear of damage or rolling. Carnage at its finest.. but those things are darn near indestructible. On Chris's final run, he bested the next driver by over 30 seconds. It was a clean run with no penalties. Congrats to both winners.
By the way, besides the trophy, what were the prizes awarded? I had to leave before the presentation.

The terrain was hard, about 1/2 the rigs suffered axle failures. Broken 44 axles and U joints were all over the place. The section pictured above was steep but the end of the trail was much steeper. The end of the trail split into two trails, the left was for the class two rigs, the right trail was for the class one rigs. The trail to the right was really steep and it was a bit unnerving going down this section....

I received $500 of paint and body work from R.V.M.D. A $300 gift certificate from Advanced Adapters, 4 Rancho 9000 shocks w/in cab controller and a couple of T shirts!

Ok I think I see the problem. The server is getting slammed with all the hits it's getting right now. Try it again in a little while.
What size are the tires on the yellow flatbed toy?
They look too tall to be 38x12.5's, and too skinny to be 38.5x16's, although I'm gonna guess they're 38x12.5's? I'm having one of those endless tire debates inside my head right now.

O yes, I hear those very same voices in my head all the time. I still want larger tires! These are 38 X 12.50's. I hear Swamper is working on a 39.50 X 12.50 tire, that could be a really good size! I also here the 42's calling my name.
85toyboy 02-17-2002, 10:33 PM So much for that sweet looking flatbed :D Your truck seems to be working awsome! Did you have to do any other modifications to get the 38's on?
ROKTOY 02-18-2002, 05:51 AM Congrats Chris!!!

msahr 02-18-2002, 08:20 AM Allright Chris! Congrats. Nice to see a Toyota win a rockcrawling event! Hey what happened to the flatbed?
mrblaine 02-18-2002, 09:06 AM Chris, I was wondering if that fellow helping you was your normal spotter?
ErikB 02-18-2002, 09:25 AM Congrats, Chris! :flipoff2:

Well I don't normally use a spotter.
Terry spotted me for this event but has never spotted me before. I think it worked good for us considering we had never done this before. Maybe next time we will get some practice in before going to an event.
mrblaine 02-18-2002, 11:07 AM Chris, the part about not working together before was fairly evident on the first run. The second run was much better.
You two get some practice in and we will stand even less of a chance of catching you.

WOW. I didn't even recognize that as your truck. I think with my 44 and 12-bolt, the 38x12.5's might be as big I'll want to go for now(at least for competition).
Blazerman1 02-18-2002, 06:36 PM Looks like it was a whole lot of fun!

Chris Geiger 02-18-2002, 08:38 PM Chris, the part about not working together before was fairly evident on the first run. The second run was much better.
I think the main problem with the first run was simply my poor driving. I was so focused on the hard part of the trail that I totally ignored the first few easy rocks. I chose a high gear and got on the throttle right from the start, and drove the worst possible line pinning my front and rear diffs in the rocks. According to my watch we spent 2 1/2 minutes winching out and respooling the winch. It seemed like most of that time was Terry trying to figure out how to open the hook on my cable. At this point I figured it was all over. I did not think I was going into the final round so put the Marlin crawl box in low range and I just drove the rest of the course like I would on a trail run. I scored a dismal 6 minutes 51 seconds, much slower than some of the stock class rigs. As the day wore on more and more rigs failed to even complete the course. After the first round I was still in third place, the top five moved onto the second round. After watching the owner of ORGS run that incredible 2 1/2 minute first run I was sure he was going to win. In the second round the trail had become harder and his 44 U joints let go. His rig was simply incredible, and he is one hell of a good driver.
I am really looking forward to next years event!
