: 1978 CJ5 Help!
fatpipepete 02-17-2002, 08:21 AM I finally got my jeep done and expecting some gremlins I found some.
First, when I am in 3rd gear driving 45+MPH I hear a whining sound... Any ideas what this is? I had to cut the drive shafts and one shaft on the tranny to get everything to fit... Could that be it? Or could it be my TC?
Then the Bell Housing I bought from Collins Bros Jeep broke where the starter bolts to the bell housing in the upper bolt.
I need some suggestions on what the easiest method of changing the bell housing out is, or if I could weld the broken bolt hole piece back on the bell housing and not have to do all the work :).
Thanks for your help!
Pete

Check yer tranny fluid level first. Could be yer drive shafts. Remove them one at a time and drive and see if the sound goes away.
You could weld it on in place if you can weld, hell I try sheit like that all the time :rasta:
BTW WELCOME NEWBIE!! :flipoff2:
CJ5-Man 02-17-2002, 01:45 PM what transmission are you running? If its the stock 3 speed then those bellhousings are easy to find, just get a new one and swap it. They are aluminum, so good luck welding to it.
Do you have power steering? that could be the whinning sound.
fatpipepete 02-17-2002, 01:50 PM It sure doesn't look like it is aluminum. I have a piece of it in my hand and it looks like it has some kind of fiber metal or something.. It doesnt look like steel or aluminum when it is broke, hehe.
I do have power steering, but that definitely isnt the culprit. I have narrowed it down to the drive shafts, tranny or transfer case. I don't think it is the transfer case cause it is supposed to be the silent type (Dana 20). Since the previous owner had modified it Im wondering if it isnt a different TC (how would I tell)? That would explain why I had to cut the drive shafts even with the original config (304, T150, Stock Bell housing).
I put a new starter on it and it starter once, but that crack is spreading so I have to do something. Can I replace the bell housing without pulling the engine?
Pete
Cutter 02-17-2002, 01:54 PM does it look like this?
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/xfer/d20b.jpg more dana 20 stuff here --->http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/xfer/d20.html
CJ5-Man 02-17-2002, 01:55 PM you dont have to pull the engine, its easier to drop the tranny when replacing the bellhousing. Try to take the t150 and dana 20 off in one piece. If you seperate them the mainshaft from the 150 may fall out and then you have to tear the tranny apart to put it all back together. Its happened to me twice so far.
fatpipepete 02-17-2002, 02:39 PM That looks like it, those two things on the top right are posts and not bolts right. Mine has two post looking things. It also says Dana on it and has a serial # tag bolted on it.
I still dont understand why the driveshafts had to be cut, must be the motor mounts were moved sometime in the last 24 years.
I think it is either the transfer case or tranny that is whining, how can I tell which one is the culprit?
I guess I will replace the bell housing this week and then everything works other than the whining noise and my 4WD light does not come on, can't find where the wires from the speedo cluster run to. Any ideas?
Pete
Thanks for the help with everything, this is a great resource.
