I just finished my 8.8 about 3 months ago (4.88 gears and a detroit) and don't want to get rid of it yet. (i.e. won't have the $$$ to build a 14 bolt now)
I'm tired of busting the 30 and don't want a 44.
I will get a good deal from a local guy building me a 64" wide HP60 w/ detroit. I will run 30 spline outers for now with 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern.
I will drill the 8.8 flanges to 5 on 5.5 and run different rotors. When I destroy the 8.8 I plan to run a C&C 14 bolt and change the RC60 hubs to the matching eight lug.
The width difference won't bother me. Is this nuts, should I just wait and swap a 14 bolt at the same time.

go with the 14b rear. The cost/ hassel to have the front hubs done 5x5.5 is not justified. this time/ money would be better off spent on a better axle. Im sure you could sell your 8.8 for nearly the cost of builiding the 14b

if you've got stock axles in it, with the 5x4.5, you don't have enough flange to drill.
You'll need to replace the axles, and that's about $300-$400.

No sh-t, I had not checked that yet. I just assumed that since so many f-150s ran them that 5 on 5.5 would fit.

I would just get another credit card and a second job working as a man whore. Then you could afford to get a d60 and 14bolt

Call me crazy, but I think the 8.8 is plenty strong... and to get the same bolt pattern front and rear, just get wheel adapters, then you have the same bolt pattern, and it will widen the axle a bit.. Just my opinion..

hey this guy here wont think you are crazy!!! his name is robert stephen http://www.rockcrawler.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=000703 other than going with this guys theory i think you might as well take the 8.8 off put it up for sale and build your 14 at the same time as the 60...seems like a lot less hassle and cheaper in the long run

It will cost you more to convert front & rear to 5 x 5.5" tan to get a 1 ton rear.

Problem solved.
I just picked up a 67" (wms-wms) 14 bolt WITH Detroit for $250. It needs to be geared to 5.13 but other than that it's in perfect shape. Someone was having a buddie's shop install it but the guy backed out. So they just have it sitting there in the way.
I talked to the guy building my front and it'll save me about $250 to keep the HP60 full width. It will also save me the machining of the hubs to be 5 on 5.5, that's roughly $500.
So I'm ending up with a 14 bolt rear and HP60 front and leaving them full width eight lug.
Now I just need to figure out how to fit it on my 78" wide trailer
I also picked up a set of eight lug white wagon spokes (which I'm painting black) for $75. Maybe this will turn out to be a budget buildup after all.
