: 9" HP Questions

OK, I think I have decided to go this route. I'd like to verify a couple of things first though.

I know that shafts are available in 28, 31, 35 and 40 spline counts. Are the 35 spliner's 1.5" in diameter?

I want to go with a HP unit. Can this be done with the 35 spline shafts? ( I wanna spool it)

I have read that the 35 spline shafts use a different third member that has larger carrier bearings (3.25" I think). Is this available with the HP carrier? (Related to the above question)

Who makes the best 35 spline shafts?

Will the 35 spline shafts work with ANY housing?

I am looking at a Lincoln full size car axle with discs and I believe it measures about 64" WMS - WMS. Can anyone tell me if this is the "big bearing" model and, if so, is it a 31 spline model as well? Would this be a good canidate?

I know, lots of questions and I appreciate all repsonses. :D

the HP 9" isnt that strong... i assume youre talking about currie, right? if so, then all that they do is take a set of ford 8.8" gears, and run them on the COAST side. first you get the weakness of the 8.8, then running them on the coast side... i wouldnt do it. why do you want this over something like a HP 60? you will actually pay less and have something that is twice as strong in the frontend.

Yes 35 spline shafts are 1.5" dia.
Yes you can run the HP third member with 1.5" 35 spline shafts. You must specify this when ordering HP third member.
Moser engineering makes 28,31,35 and 40 spline shafts for 9".
Yes you can put 35 spline shafts in any housing
I am running 35 spline Moser shafts in early truck (small bearing) housing w/ HP third member. I have heard some say HP third members are weak. I have been running it w/ 38" SX's for over a year now w/o a single problem.

Well, I am considering it for a rear.

Reasons:

The HP 60's are getting hard to find and quite expensive.

60's are big heavy pigs.

I know where there are (2) 9" rears with discs right now that I could probably lay my hands on for $150 each.

It's different.

It's lighter and will have more clearance than the 60.

I'm not totally convinced yet. I have heard good and bad about both. I like the strength of the 60 and the HP 60 is very cool. They're just not plentiful at PnP. I am only going to run 38's and I figure a 9" with 35 spline axles would be perfect. The HP would be nice as well, it'll cure some of my driveshaft angularity and tuck things up out of the way.

i am running a currie HP in the rear of my YJ. it is a big bearing 31 spline witha mini spool. the only problem i have had is i just broke a rear axle from the pressure of a mini spool, V-8, and 37s.Gary

if I were going to run a hp 9", I would stick w/ the 31 spline shafts. If something does break, I would rather it be a shaft than the pinion gear.

I'll go out on a limb here and say those who say the 9" hi pinion is weak don't run them and believe everything they hear. I have a 300hp v8, manual tranny and 38's and have never had 1 problem with the rc9 rear. The pinion is the same diameter as a 60 pinion so...
