View Full Version : Best way to cut holes in 1/2 plate?

I got a drill, hole saws or torch, will these work, anyone with this problem?

I cut 1 1/4" holes in 1/2" plate all the time. Works great. hold the hole saw at a very slight angle when starting the cut, until it is set in. Otherwise, your hole will be wollered (sp) out.

I think like .75, 1 and 1.25 holes. As long as hole saws will put the holes I can use the torch for the rest. Thanks.

I cut 2 holes in 1" plate, 2 1/2" hole saw. Did it in my little bench drill press. Slow speed and lots of oil. I just put a bungee on the handle and hooked it to the bench for a sort of automaitic feed. Took around 10 minutes to drill them.

what I have found when drilling holes with hole saw in heavy metal I will drill a hole right on edge of cut path so cuttings can clear makes hole saw cut much quicker

Quoted for posterity. So simple, but I have never heard of either of these techniques before. I'll have to try 'em next time it comes up..
