: Rear Locker

I am replacing the rear 10 bolt in my K5 with a 12 bolt and I was wondering if anyone has any opinions/experiences with running a Lock Right or a Detroit EZ Locker? Is one better than the other?

Just a little FYI, replacing a 10 bolt with a 12 bolt is pretty pointless considering the 12 bolt is just as big a P.O.S. as a 10 bolt. Save yourself the trouble and get a 14 bolt, they are a dime-a-dozen and almost unbreakable. Just my 2cents.

well the 12 bolt is a little stronger, but i wouldnt put a locker in it, youd only be asking for trouble

The reason I am going to a 12 bolt is because of the gear ratio (and I already have one). I know a 12 bolt is not as strong as a 14ff, but that is why I am not going to spend the $600 for a full Detroit, but less than half that for a Lock Right or EZ Locker. For what I am doing a 12 bolt will be just fine (for now, anyway).

My worn out 305 hasn't had enough power to grenade the 10 bolt rear yet, so a 12 bolt should last a while. :flipoff2: Besides, I have spare parts.

All 12 bolt criticism aside, anyone like one locker better than another?

Strike an arc on that thing if you dont want to spend money. Weld it up and it'll pull like no other.

i would stay away from the EZ-locker. I have seen two of em blow up on the first night that it was installed. one was on a cherokee with the I6, and the other was on a toyota with the 4 banger. I would go with the lock-rite myself

No, this is not a daily driver.

Thanks for the info. I will probably go with the Lock Right.

Since It's not a daily driver, i'm with TBItoy, weld that bad boy up and wheel it.

But be warned, I rolled with a welded 12 bolt for all of 6 days before she exploded on me and I was only running 35's at the time.

and i have welded several, all running 38 or better tires, and all suffering broken dana 60 shafts with no failure in the welded diff. its all in how you do it.

Maybe you guys are right.

I'll weld it and use the money saved on the locker to buy a 14ff.

Another question: how is life on the street with a welded rear? This isn't my daily driver, but I drive it to where I wheel (no tow rig yet :( ) and camping and such. Usually no more that 30 miles from the house.

That diff. will get hotter, quicker; so make sure you change your diff. fluid pretty regularly.

The only other issue I had was trying to sneak up on somebody, welded diff=major tire chirp around corners, people will know your coming (if your exhaust doesn't give you away first:D )
