It may be a full spool or may be a limited slip carrier, I can't completely tell from the picture. I just put a mini-spool in my 9 inch and the limited slip carrier looked similar to that. If there are holes in it and you can see spider gears and/or clutch discs then it is a Limited slip. If it looks like a collar that connects the axle shafts then it should be a full spool. I don't know if you need a new carrier but I do know they don't make 4.86s, you mean either 4.88s or 4.56s.

4.86's, i was looking for 4.88's but didnt find any only the 4.86. another question. will the 4.86 rear work with a 4.88 front?

also there are no carrier breaks for the 9", any gears and any carrier will work together.

you will need to clearence the housing to run anything numericly larger then a 4.56:1

that "might" be mini spooled but that dosen't look like the full spool I installed in mine.

definatly not a spool io say it's a limited slip or open carrier. spools have a flange for the gear and the center it all the same size..

Clearance? I have 4.86's in my 9" and didn't have to "clearance" anything. Fit just fine;)

Not a full spool. In fact, it looks like an open carrier.

put some shafts in it and spin one side by hand, if the other shaft spins in the same direction its a spool or an LSD, if they spin in opposite directions its open

looks like a stock trac loc...

That is a factory trac-lok. Its probably like all the rest of the factory trac-loks.... worn to the point of being open.

yes, you will need to touch up the 3rd member housing so the the ring gear can rotate without hitting the part of the housing that holds the end of the pinion. it is mainly from where the casting is put together. just touch it with a grinder enough to allow it to rotate freely.....mine went in with out hitting also but it was to close for me so I just took a small amout out....just enough to clean up the casting line. and the bottom of the 3rd it has the same casting marks and you might want to touch it up there also.

Doesn't look like a trac-lok to me. They have countersunk ring gear bolts with smaller diameter heads. Looks like an open with bigger bolt heads on a machined flat (maybe its welded into a spool). Spools usually don't have the fatter area for the diff spiders and shafts.

Heres what a trac-loc looks like (busted to boot, which is common)

Hmmm you must of gotten some weird ass 3rd, as I got 4.88s in mine on a detroit, never had to do this "clearancing" you speak of, and this is the first I heard of it.

I've had to do it to several for 4.88+. Dunno if it's the gears, the housing, erwut. I don't enjoy weakening a known weak point but that's what it takes.

i had to grind my housing down a little also. beat my head into the wall for a few days thinking i had the wrong gears or missing something. they were 4.56s with a mini spool in a 73 bronco housing? anyone have problems with this particular housing or is it just random? id like to know which one worked and which ones had to grind.

which third member do you have there are 3 kinds i think. standard, N, and war ?

so it might vary between the 3.

the "N" case is the best, the "WAR" case is the worst.....I wouldn't even use a war case unless it was in a DD that you didn't abuse. there is another designation that falls in between the "N" and the "WAR"......A7W????? can't remeber the exact casting and I am in class so I don't have access to my 9" link. but I will post it later if y'all want it. I think it is from a ford muscle site. I plan on takeing apart the other 9" I have to check if it is just on certan housings or not. I don't think you realy weakin them because the amount of material is just where the casting shift happened and there are burs left over. at least that is all I remove.
