If I use a short shaft th400 can i pull the rear housing off and install a transfer case adaptor and bolt the two together or is the th400 (or th350 )two differant animals?

A short shaft 2wd TH-400 uses the same length/spline count shaft as the early 205 version of the 400. The later ('85 and up) 205 version of the 400 uses a shorter output shaft. So if you are planning on using the short shaft 2wd version of the TH-400 and an early TH-400/205 combo then you're good to go. A TH-350/205 won't work without modifications.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, had to trim mine for some reason, cannot remember why at the moment

me too. but i made my own adapter, so it was my fault.
