: 700R4 problem???

I have a 700R4 that is acting up on me. I am not familiar enough with a 700r4 to diagnose the problem. I have a 90 K5 Blazer,
I was going 65 down the freeway and the the vehicle just started to slown down, as I gave it more gas it felt like the tranny was slipping. I got off the freeway and tried the other gears and had the same result. Tranny rpm goes high before it will move. Once in motion it goes for a while then rpms go up as it hunts for a "gear" or clutchpack. I tried two tranny shop that said it would be a $1000- $1300 fix. they gave it the 2 minute diagnosis without driving it. Can it be adjusted or am I looking at a rebuild? The k5 has only 89K on it and it drives...
Any thought would ne appreciated.

check the fluid level

A problem with a 700R4?!?!? Imagine that:rolleyes:

After checking the fluid level, if it is correct, you might want to drop the pan and check for some "bad" stuff there.

One "common" problem I've personally seen on two 700R4's (might have been more, never got an official diagnostic on the other 3:p ) is the govoner going out:( Its the bowl looking thing on the driverside of the vehicle.... on an s10 blazer, it can be changed in the vehicle.... at least with a 2 inch body lift it could:p

You should be able to get it rebuilt for closer to $800... I've had the joy 4-5 times with the most expensive being the GM Target 700R4. Of course, this was me bringing the tranny to them AND about 3 years ago. OTOH, it was the SF bay area:p

Stop driving it!!! Different tranny but I melted a 4L60E so bad that the case was warped and they could not use any off it. It was doing the same thing. Slipping=heat, heat is bad UMMKAY. :D

How hard is it to do a rebuild. I got a good opinion from a tranny guy this morning that said its the clutches that need replaccement. Anybody ever tackle one. ??????

I have taken a th350 apart. It's in a box now. I can do alot of things but an auto tranny is a complex piece. :D I would leave this to someone who fixes them everyday and gives you a warranty when you pick it up.

it's cooked

same thing with my Dads coming home from a long trip
most people fwakem by driving in overdrive all the time.
He is now on his 5th 700R4 (a rebuilder dident know the difrance from his ass and a hole in the ground so that blew 3 of them) ther crap with a V8

I just started working on mounts to swap in a 400

a side note with step by step instrucions how hard whould it be to rebuild a 400. B&M seems to have a kit that has a step by step instruction book and they advertise it like any mechanic chould do it

If you have a good exploded veiw and a expert to ask questions if you get stumped autos arent that bad! I Have helped rebuild 3 ford FMX "cruise-o-matics" this summer (can you say 500+hp and stock tranny?) Honestly there were less parts in an automatic then I expected. If its your only ride I would get it done professionally because if you screw up and need to have to pay in the end its gonna cost you alot more.

I've never rebuilt one by myself, but I assisted with my dad on a couple. The one thing you'll definetly need is the tool for the 1st/reverse clutch pack. Without you can't do any good. Other than that it's ordinary hand tools.

Your concern is that either the 3-4 clutch is not applying, or the 3-4 clutchpack is trashed. Could be as simple as a cut o-ring not allowing the cluth to apply (no forward motion), or the clutch plates are worn out (may be slight movement with rpm, and burnt smelling tranny fluid).

Either way you will need to tear into to repair the concern. At that point it would be best to just rebuild it entirely.

actuly that makes sence cuz whene our first one went out I checked the oil and it was fine and did not smell burnt
and when the others went they whould stay in 1st for a long time to about 4000 RPM and then it whould shift and it just about snaped your neck.

if you get a manual it will have a reference chart, showing what is being applied and held in each gear
you would look for the one specific to the gear range you are looking for

if you do it in a methodical fashion, clean enviroment, and take your time it isn't that hard

you will need some very specific tools, the rebuild manual will list these

if the tranny will shift into second on its own, the governor is working, the governor is the backup for shifting

i found the chart for your tranny
i would be willing to bet it is the 3-4 clutch

i would do a presure check on it before i took it apart to make sure it is within specs

Smitrock.....i am going to get a gauge and test, are you saying that if I have good pressure (300psi) I could just repklace the 3-4th gear clutch packs? The oil is not burnt ...nice and clean and up to the mark. What to do?

if you do the pressure check and it comes up to specs
you know the pump, pressure regulator valve, and the
reverse boost valve is working

the 3-4 clutch pack is the common element for the problem you are describing

you have to tear down the tranny, so i would replace all the clutches and seals
