: Destroyed my Transmission!

Obstacle 10 in UROC broke my transmission and I need to replace it. I have blown my Jeep fund building it to where it is now, so what is the best, cheapest option? I would like an automatic transmission if possible, but this will prolly be too spendy. Are there any cheap ways to swap in a TH350 or something into a YJ with the 4.0 motor and an NP231? Is there a cheap way to mate an SM465 to a 4.0 and an NP231? Or is the cheapest way by far just to find another AX15 and toss it in for now? Anybody got one?

Oh yeah, the search didn't help much.

This sounds like a viable option, as 420s sound like they can be had for very cheap. I found a site that gives details on swapping this tranny into a 4 banger YJ, any site that you know of that gives details on swapping an SM420 into a 4.0 YJ? Or is it all the same? What vehicle would I get that bellhousing out of?

I think a TF 727 out of a wagoneer will bolt in,column w/shifter also. ( verify that it will fit though )

I like the sounds of bolt in. Adapters are $$$$$. Can anyone verify this? Will my 231 go on without a call to Advanced Adapters?

This is from the Jeeptech pages...727: The Torque Flite 727 3 speed automatic is a good candidate for a low buck heavy duty automatic for CJs and carbed YJs. The TF 727 was used in full size Jeeps (SJs and J series pickups) in the 80s and early 90s. It has the standard AMC bolt pattern on the engine side and it has the circular bolt pattern and 23 spline output on the transfer case side.

I wonder why they say it is a good swap for *carbed* YJs. Mine's a 93 so it has EFI. I'll check out that link, this may be another good option. Thanks, keep em coming!

I also found this info on other trannys that should fit the engine side...at least those for the 6...
Chrysler 904 three-speed 1980-1983: CJ-5, 1980-1986: CJ-7 w/four-cylinder, 1984-1986: Cherokee w/four-cylinder and 2.8L V-6, 1987-up: Wrangler w/four-cylinder 2.74, 1.55, 1.00
Chrysler 999 three-speed (30/32 RH) 1980-1986: CJ-7 Scrambler w/4.2L six-cylinder, 2.74, 1.55, 1.00

I think they say the 727 for carb. engines is they went to the 904/909. I know the 909 is a lock-up don't see why a 727 won't work with FI:confused: they used the 207 TC in early '87
i'll keep lookin...

This is from the JJournal.Net
" The transfer case in the Wrangler vehicles is referred to as the New Process NP231 and NP241. The input gear of these transfer cases has had some various spline size specification changes, and it is important that you know these variations prior to ordering any transfer-case-to-transmission adapter kits. In general, if the vehicle was equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, the transfer case will have a 21-spline input gear. The only exception to this is the Peugeot applications, which always had the 21-spline transfer case. The AX15, used with the 4.0 High Output, and the automatic 727 always have a 23-spline input gear. ."
looks like the spline count will match and the bolt patern will too.
i'll keep lookin for the difinite answer...

I have a 23 spline NP231. I have heard good things about the 904 trannys. This is really helpful!!!

The reason whay they say it only good fo carbed jeep is that with the FI in the 4.0L you need a CPS. The only way would be to cut a hole in the bellhousing for the CPS to sit in. If you want a good auto for cheap why not get a aw-4 out of a mid 91 and up XJ. The only prob there is that you need to get the tranny putter hooked up so that the tranny will work. Or get a tf999 out of a 4L YJ, TJ. Another good option would be to put in a nv3500, They use the same bell housing as the ax-15 so you already have one of the parts and its a 27% overdrive. I cant remember the gear raitos but they are decent and its stronger than the ax-15. If you want auto i would say go tf999 or aw-4.

If you want a nv3500 i can hook ya up for around $400

Do I need an adapter to put an NP231 on the end of an NV4500? TF999 sounds a bit out of my price range.

If you want an auto the tf999 would be the cheapest way to go!
And i think you mis read my post ...i said nv3500 not nv4500. The 3500 is used in 2000+ TJs so know hooking up the Np 231 is not hard nor do you need an adapter. And if down the road you want to put on a dana 300 all you have to do is get a clocking ring or grind/mill the output shaft 1/8". What do you really want auto or stick? both tranny you can prob. find a tf999 cheaper than a nv3500.

I really want an auto, and I've pretty much settled on the TF999 now. Thanks for all the input.

Because if its carbed that means its a 4.2L and the 4.2L have the same bolt pattern as the V8s but not the 4.0L...TF999 sounds like your best option...but I wouldn't "settle" for it, I would do the AX15 for now and then get what you really want TH350 or something like that:D:D:D
