Im thinking about building a table for my chopsaw. The thing is about 70lbs and Im gettin tired of moving it around, so I want to give it a dedicated table. Its gonna be only as big as the base of the saw so it wont ever get in the way of odd shaped pieces. Ill get some HF roller stands for long stuff. Im kinda a gadget freak so I want to add as many clever little features as possible. Heres some ideas ive got so far:

storage for c-clamps, spare blades, power cord
work light
maybe a graduated stop

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks

How about making the table so you can move the whole saw to cut angles with a clamp permantly mounted to the table.

Coolest one I've seen was a hinged attachment to a welding table. The saw was bolted to it and could be flopped down 90 degrees to the table when not in use.

Thats a good idea. Ive considered doing that, I even modeled it in solidworks. But it would take more time and $$ than I want to spend now, so I want to keep the base simple, but make sure everything I need to cut is stored right there.

Thanks

Thats pretty cool, thanks for the link. I think I want to keep the saw fixed, but a flip up material rest would be cool.

Am I seeing that correctly? Is he using a wood based mitre saw as a chop saw? I didn't realize you could do that.

I did it, and still sometimes use it - but I prefer my bandsaw.

Ive seen a guy almost ruin a nice makita miter saw using it to cut metal. Worked good for awhile, but ended up replacing most of the plastic parts.

i am building one. basically mine is being built from metal i already had and it will double as a metal rack (storage under the table) for stuff 8' and shorter. it will be on casters so i can moe it out away from the wall for angled cuts. no pic's and i am not done.

I dunno.........one of the better ideas I ever heard (but can't take credit for it) is to put it on a 55 gallon drum, built a catch on the back from sheetmetal and cut a hole in the lid of the drum so all your shavings and abrasive dust get funneled down into the drum.

I've just never done it 'cause 1) floor space is at a premium and 2) it'd suck for cutting 10' lengths and such. In the end I kinda just prefer the chop saw on the floor.

I have a stand for my wood cutting chop saw, and it has saved countless amounts of back pain and swearing. It's got folding legs, wheels at one end, and extension arms that go ~4ft out of each side. I think it could be adapted for a metal saw with no trickery, but might not work with long lengths without additional support. Cutting 2x6x14, I have to lean on the board to keep it from flopping off - it'd be way worse with 2x4 channel or the like.

I paid about $100 and feel it was worth every penny. It was just on sale at Mynards for $70.
