: Fuel cell "lining"
XtrmTJ 02-18-2002, 12:44 PM I just made my own fuel cell. it is 35 in. X35 in. X 6 in. w/ a 9 in. round, 8 in. deep sump. I,m using all the original fittings, intank fuelpump, and everything.. This is a 10 ga. steel cell. How/ What do I seal the inside with ? I dont want it to rust. TIA !:D

should of made it out of aluminum.
XtrmTJ 02-18-2002, 01:34 PM I,m not a true Rock God.....I,m just a poser... I can,t weld aluminum ?  :D :flipoff2: :clown:

than your gonna have to deal with rust. i don't know of any coating to use on steel tanks.
Belly Dragger 02-18-2002, 01:52 PM Most motorcycle shops sell stuff for steel tanks. If you get the kit, it consists of acid, wash and poly liner. I forget the brand name but just call a shop, it's a common fix on steel motocycle tanks.
It's what I plan on using once my tank gets welded together.
The acid etches the tank and removes old rust etc... the wash neutralizes the acid and removes water. The poly liner is s liquid that you roll around on the inside of the tank and it makes a complete coating. This works really well for old tanks.
I think it's around 50 bucks for the kit. But I'm really guessing on that.
Belly Dragger 02-18-2002, 01:56 PM It's called KREEM
http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=32824&BQ=jcw2
30 bucks for upto a 20 gallon tank.
MattS 02-18-2002, 02:26 PM I buddy of mine used Eastwood gas tank sealer. http://www.eastwoodcompany.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe?&UID=2002021817243180&SKW=TSC10&FNM=20
Worked great. You can get it thru Jegs or summit.

Tractor Supply Co. sell it (tank sealant) locally
zstrange 02-18-2002, 03:48 PM dont use the kreem. i work on motorcycles for a living and i cant tell you how many tanks are ruined by that stuff. wurth makes a paint called rust guard. it is totally impervious to gas. very similar to POR15. any wurth rep can get it for you or email me i can get you a can. kind expensive $50-60 quart i think. ive done 40-50 motorcycle tanks w/ it and never had a single problem. you will need to etch the tank w/ muriatic acid first but thats easy. later.

dont use the kreemReally? I've been lining my tanks with this stuff for years without problems.
What kind of problems do you see? Is it the way it's applied or????
More info please.
XtrmTJ 02-18-2002, 05:31 PM THANKS, guys ! :D Exactly the Info I was lookin for ! This place never ceases to amaze me ! ANY tech question I,ve ever asked has been answered ! Too Cool ,guys !;) :) :p :D

So a tank liner wouldn't be necessary for an aluminium tank...hmm good to know.
CJ Lagos 02-18-2002, 09:01 PM I'm pretty sure that Jegs or somebody like that sells the foam you can put inside the cell to keep the fuel from sloshing around.
My 20 gallon aluminum fuel cell is filled with foam all the way to the top, I think there are two big pieces in it. I've had to stick my hand down there to check the fuel leve before :P

I agree. I'm not a welder by trade, just by hobby. In the last course I took I tried doing some Aluminium and it was a CINCH!!
I will defintely be going that route if I ever need to make a Fuel Cell.:usa:
IronBenderII 02-19-2002, 06:21 PM Oh shiat, I'm going to get flamed over this... Oh well.
So what's it take to weld aluminum? Just a machine with enough balls and special wire/stick?
I've got a shitty little 110v wire feed that works really well for steel. Do they sell special wire for aluminum?
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: Flame away mutha's!:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Cutter 02-19-2002, 08:25 PM can't you braze aluminum?
Triaged 02-20-2002, 02:50 AM Green locTite (I forget the p/n) is also sold in a larger bottle that is called porusity(sp?) sealant that comes with a brush in the cap. It is fuel proof and can be used to seal up welds to keep them from leaking.

they do sell aluminum mig wire, but the best way, by far is to tig weld it.

Here's another tech tip for ya - buy a 3/32" lift kit for your commas, turn your "I,m"s into "I'm"s. So what, you got an ancient laptop keyboard or something?
Don't bother to thank me, just goes with the job.
IronBenderII 02-20-2002, 07:48 AM Hey XJ, I don,t see how that pertains to the subject. Nice way to pad your posts though. I,d suggest that if you don,t have anything constructive to add' keep your keyboard to yourself.:flipoff2:
MattS 02-20-2002, 07:59 AM Somebody's :bender: ran away and they are in a bad mood!! :flipoff2:
Back to the subject, I have a buddy of mine who is certified for welding aluminum. He has both a mig and tig on his welding truck. The mig setup even pisses him off. A tig will lay down a very clean leak free weld compared to a mig. But if you have to ask what it takes to weld aluminum you don't have the skills to do it so take it to somebody that does or you had better at least practice first on something you can throw away! Even with a $3500 tig setup I had a hell of a time laying a bead and not burning holes in the stock. I will leave aluminum stuff to someone who has practice and knows what the hell they are doing. :D

Aw, he's just teed I didn't answer his question. Sorry, dude, I was too busy trying trying to be funny. Two things on welding aluminum, first its got to be hotter, I don't know if your setup could get the heat required. Second, you've got to finish faster at the end, once it gets going. Takes a little practice. Get some scrap stuff and play with it, if you can weld steel you ought to be able to pick up aluminum. Also, as I'm sure you know, watch out for the fumes cuz aluminum fumes are especially nasty.
IronBenderII 02-20-2002, 10:44 AM Thanks for answering the question XJ
Given that the fuel cell would be made out of thinner material (I'd do a heavier steel skid plate below it), do you think my cute litte welder could handle the task? Seems like it could. I guess I'll have to go get some scrap and give it a try.
Anybody know a good place to buy aluminum for cheap in South Sac?
5150 motosports 02-21-2002, 09:37 PM hey bro if you need some one to lay down some dimes i might be able to hook you up , you know since your a local E.G. boy
IronBenderII 02-22-2002, 09:24 AM I PM'd ya 5150!
