Bad, Bad Suburban

'99 GMC 2500 Suburban SLT 4x4, 7.4, etc... I was halfway home on 700 mile trip and a BAD grinding noise began instantly at 70mph, pulled over right away and eventually limped to next exit. I thought rear dif blew up so I pulled rear driveshaft in attempt to limp to a nearby friends house, but when I put it in gear truck did not move and a noise came from t-case that sounded like tranny would if ya threw it in park while moving.

This is a "push-button" case with "full-time 4x4" option. (also has 2 High). Could this be a broken chain? What other parts could be busted? I'm gonna drag the thing home this weekend and drop the t-case and maybe look inside...

Would like to know what to expect. Any sources for info/parts would also be appreciated.

Oh yea, wife has no wheels in the meantime...

I'm gonna take the t-case out this weekend. Where can I find a manual for this thing? Anyone know what might've gone wrong? :(

Sounds a lot like the c clip in the rear of the tailshaft broke and it's letting the output shaft move against the bull gear and synchro. it's pretty straightforward, the bolts come out, the speed sensor comes out, then some snap rings and/or pieces of snap rings, then the shaft, etc. you shouldn't have to pull the low range out of it, and if you didn't drive it far, the bushings and stuff will be ok. inspect all of teh bushings and pump pickup carefully!!!!!! if anything is blue, then the bushings are likely roasted and it will be easier and more cost effective to buy a reman case. if the bushings/shafts are ok, then get a new bull gear, a new synchro, and a new bronze clutch blocker ring and ALL NEW SNAP RINGS!! clean the case and pump pickup--or get new ones, with a new pump for security, and reassemble. good luck!! :) Thanks, I was hoping to have some idea what I might find in there. I drove less than a mile very slow, so hopefully I can fix it... I picked up a Haynes manual hoping it would discuss t-case, but of course it does not.

Where can I find instructions and more importantly pictures of my t-case?

How much is a shop manual?

What's a good source for parts/different case?

YOU CAN BUY A gm shop manual at the parts counter, that will likely be the most comprehensive source of info, also they will have parts!!
