Looking at buying a ford crew cab turbo diesel and wanted your opinion on how many miles is too much. The crew cab turbo diesel (not powerstroke) that we found has 150K.
Is this too high of mileage to bother with?
Can I likely expect some major repairs in the next 50K?

I have a 6.9 w/ATS turbo and 240,000 on it. No problems. It will all depend on how it was driven. If they never watched their pyro they could have caused some damage. However with only 150k, I would not be scared of it. Just look for how much it smokes when it is sitting there.

As ems said it does greatly depend on how it was taken care of. The most important thing is how often the oil was changed.
But they are usually good for 200-250K without and problems.

I own a 1994 Ford 4x4 Turbo Diesel and though mine has only 91000 on it, I wouldn't worry about one with 150K. As said, it depends on how it was maintained but it should be ok up to 250K. If it has an auto trans, that is what I would be worried about. Ford didn't seem to have their diesel, auto trans figured out in 1994 yet. That is why I bought a manual trans.

wanna buy a 1990 f-250 xlt xcab 4x4 7.3 E40D......?? I'll sell it
pretty cheap today... because........................
The P O S E40D died again on saturday.... here I go again..
it's not the motor to worry about, it's the junk auto-trans that
will 2-3k kill you everytime it wants to................ I'm pissed right
now, can you tell?? time for a 6speed.....I'll never own another
ford truck with an auto trans.... ever...

My 94 had over 500,000km( 310,000 miles) and over 16,000 hours on it when i sold it about a year ago. The most expensive repair to the engine was a new waterpump. As mentioned above, maintenance or the lack off is going to be the largest factor in the amount of service you are going to get out of it. My engine was serviced at either 300 hours or 7500 km, whatever came first.

Thanks for the input. Sounds as though the ford engines will last provided they have been taken care of...but not the auto transmissions. Basically the same situation with the older dodges except the getrag 5-speeds seem to be prone to wear also.
We are trying to decide between an '92 dodge cummins with extended cab and 120,000 miles for $11,200 and a '94 crew cab ford turbo diesel with 154,000 miles for $13,500 (most of the fords like this tend to be $15,000 at least so this one will probably disappear by the time I can go look at it).
Thanks again:)

if it's 2 wheel drive you can source the parts off of IHC medium duty trucks and busses to swap in an allison...or put a 3rd pedal on the floor and swap in the ZF 5 (out of the same vintage) or 6 (out of the current body style) speed...
