Found a cheap J-20 (360/T18/D20, 44/60)and was thinking it would a quick and dirty trail rig. Thinking flat bed, 38s or so, possible front 60 out of chevy or something similar maybe not right way but soon afterwards, rocker protection, TBI for the 360, gears to match the tires, general stuff to make it run clean.
My question is I have searched IFSJA and not come up with what I am looking for, basically a lot of stock sytle stuff that guys seem to drive - basically clean trucks but not trail rigs so to speak.
I want to see some kick-ass J trucks and hear about what you have done to them to make them reliable trail rigs, and I dont want to hear just go YJ or CJ.

If you search on here for FSJ unite I know there was a thread titled that not too long ago. That was a great thread with lots of pics posted.
Check out Rustysoffroad.com for some cheap lift options, I know this suggestion will get hammered but he's got a couple pics of FSJ's as well to look at.

Something like that but with a lot less overhang and maybe even moving the J-truck longbed wheelbase more into the 110 area.

Look a little harder on IFSJA, or post up over there. Sawzall and blue wrench are real popular w/ a bunch of guys on that site.

Yeah, and that's a nice truck, too!!
Go back over to IFSJA and look in the Off Road Tech section.
Don't just look for J20's. The wags and Chero's have many of the same drivetrains. Some of the mods you mention have been done on wags or chero's and that info would translate directly to what you are wanting to do. Biggest and nearly only diff between the J10 and the J20 is the axles. If you want to look at pictures, a good site is www.fullsizejeeps.com
I wheeled in CO. a couple of years ago with a J10 flatbed on 35's.

Guzz how did it get around? You have any issues with weight/apporach angle? I am still sorting through all the stuff on IFSJA and will look into the off-road tech section.

Tony, it got around real well, climbed right up Poukeepsie trail. Had a slick little flatbed on it. The guy who had it sold it shortly thereafter. He was from Colorado. Might be able to spot a pic of it on fullsizejeeps.com If I come across one, I'll hook you up.

Tony,
I am in the middle of a build up of a 1977 J-10. I will try to post pics this weekend.
I put Rancho 44044's on the front with SOA and put 63" chevys on the rear mounted under the frame. I moved the rear axle forward about 12" giving me a wheelbase of 108" with not much uptravel. I am putting in a TF727 trans and a Dana 300 transfercase in to avoid all the possible quadratrac problems.
