I just wanted to get some opinions on GBR HD axles or any other HD axles you guys are using b4 I buy.

I've been using GBR's rear HD axles for a number of years of moderate wheeling in CO/UT in a usually expedition-heavy, Detroit locked and 33" tire Disco 1. Except for the bling center caps wanting to fall off all the time (locktite fixed 'em), I've had no issues and minimal twist.

I've been running the GBR (Maxidrive) axles for about 5 years with a Detroit. The last couple with 35s. Haven't broken one yet.

I hope that was not directed toward me! I was simply wanting some unbiased opinions instead of calling the manufacturer. And fuck Dweb the only thing I can read on that shit hole is the 16 year old wanting to know if 32x10.50 will fit his ride or some fucking imbasile wanting an 8 inch lift. So don't tell me to go to Dweb (which I'm not sure that was directed at me) but anyway, I try to be polite and post what I need to know instead of making some smart-ass remark about fucking Dweb! The only thing that place is good for as someone elluded to in another thread is fancy knives and BS like that! And you can stick those sandtracks up your .........!

I am using GBR 24spl HD rears in '91 RR & Rovertracks 2522 HD front kit( approx. 9-10 mos now?) happy w/ it so far- nothings broken. I guess its a good enough set-up ...unless you're some trust fund spendin' rover owner wheelin' mom's old Rangie and can blow $5K on axles, etc. , its decent for tha money!

GBR axles are good for rovers with upto 35inch tires on the front . With larger tires and hard wheeling you will break them. The rears might be good for 37 inchs tires.

Agree...I am running 33x10.50-15 ,so not nearly as heavy a set up as 35-37" tires---looks like LWG has done a pretty good job recently on this BB with the Toyota / big rear fender mod

for a drop-in 24spl replacement, I think Keith's axles are the best on the market and the best priced. for comparison, here's a quick pic of one sitting next to the old 10 spliners before dropping them in.

I appreciate the input guys, minus Larry I got some good info. I guess that guy wasted a minute of his life writing that smart-ass comment. I'm a newb when it comes to Rovers, but I know my shit on FJ40s so please excuse me if I'm not yet a guru on Rovers, and I'm definitely not a poser nor a trust fund baby, I'm in college and basically try and save every dime to make my 97' Disco. an animal offroad yet still driveable to school. But thanks again to those who provided some good info.

FWIW Matt, a local buddy of mine was running RoverTracks HD rears (D1 w/ Detroit 33" ) and then he and I both got RT HD 2522 fronts about the same time. Well, mine sat on the workbench for 2 months while he put his in and wheeled @ Paragon, PA. One of the fronts blew halfway through the weekend on a mild obstacle; he called Keith and they talked it over, etc. I gave him one of my yet to be installed cv's and a week or so later one of the OTHER fronts blew ! Keith & Troy @ RT were very cool about it , actually said they had a bad batch of heat treatment or something, replaced all said cv's w/ new batch and all has been well since. So....I would rate Rovertracks pretty high but I would also say GBR is pretty reputable as well.

Hey Dumbass! Keith is not the manufacturer. He resells Moser axles. The only other way to get Moser axles made for a Rover is to call Moser. Then you will have to machine the spacer he sells.

Hey Larry, liked the pics of your Rangie from last week. Looks like the Toyota's held up well. I just got mine with the E-lockers in my old leafer today and will wire them up tomorrow. I had Dutchman make my axles for me. The fronts are based on a D44 with u-joints...It's a little 88" Series on 31"s so I'm not too worried about breaking them and they fit perfectly inside the swivel ball.

Is Keith having them made for Series trucks too or just coilers?

I'm not sure if Keith is making them for Series. I suspect he could make them for anything and would consider it. Why did you go with U-Joints? Will the Longfield CV's not fit in the ball? The 30-spline longfields are way strong than D44 U-joints according to the testing he has done. Otherwise you should have a pretty sweet setup!

Relax hammerhead, I'm a newb here too and they don't bust my balls.....much. :flipoff2:

Thanks Larry. I went with the u-joint for no other reason than I don't know much about the CVs and their dimensions. The u-joint axles were modeled after the original 10 spline inners and the 24 spline outers that Rover used in the later 109s. Doing it this way allowed me to keep everything stock up front as far as the stub axle, hub, FWH, etc. I had to sleeve the inners just a bit for the collar, inner axle bearing race and retainer but the outer is exactly the same as the Rover one except the bigger yoke. I didn't even bother with CTMs and just plunked a Precision 371 in there. To tell you the truth, I've never even broken a 10 spline rear let alone a front so I'm not too worried about it. I did this swap for the locker more than anything. I run an 80hp diesel and 31"s so I think I'm pretty safe. And seeing what you're doing with the Toyota centers and 37"s in a big Rangie only reassures me!

I honestly don't remember what the Rover spec'd Moser axles are. I wanna say they are roughly the same diameter as the Maxi's. Regarding waisted or non, it seems they are the opposite of Maxi's in this regard. Give Keith at rovertracks a call, he will definitely know the specs.

Edited for stupidity!

AFAIK most Moser axles are made from 1541H - a common automotive engineering steel. The H means the axle blanks are supplied induction hardened and then the splines cut into the hardened steel. 1541H axles are usually non-waisted.
