: Can a Explorer 8.8" be converted to 6x5.5?

Can it be converted to 6x5.5 to match a FSJ front axle? Is there enough material on the end of the axle shaft? would this weaken the axle too much?

Tas,

When I put my 8.8 in, I asked the same question (TJoop on here had the axle flange redrilled) and I even called Moser (actually I was going to 5 x 5.5").

Moser said they will do it, but that it will only leave 1/8" between the hole and the edge of the flange, and this will require screw in studs.

After hearing that H8Monday had no problems with his adapters I decided to go that route. I purchased mine from http://www.performancewheel.com/ . they are billtet aluminum. I do remember the sales rep saying that they do not make adapters that change the nuber of lugs (ie. 5 to 6) but only the pattern diameter.

Then I did the 5 lug conversion for the Wag front.

Actually I just had Dutchman make me a new set of shafts with the 5x5.5 pattern. They use the screw in studs, I had to switch to thin head so that I could push the axle in far enough to get the c-clip on. (had a little interference with the e-brake assy)

I have been meaning to stop by there with the stock shafts to see if the flange is big enough to redrill to a 5.5 pattern to use as spares but haven't found the time yet. (Hey! they're 15 minutes from me :flipoff2: ) I will get there someday. :D

I converted mine to 6 lug to match my waggy 44 front. I used a aluminum wheel adapter to accomplish mine. They work bad ass, zero problems with them and the guy garunteed they would never break!

One question Why? If you are running 6 lug pattern why not run a FSJ model 20? A lot more beef than a CJ 20 and just about free in wrecking yards.

I am in the process of the same thing. I have an 8.8 rear and a waggy front. I think I would like to get adapters for the rear and change it to 5x5.5. I am not real sure about the front and how to change that. What parts do I need to do the front? Ford hubs and what calipers what spindle etc...

How much were your adapters for a pair?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dutchman!
Converted my 9" axles to 6 lug to match my waggy 44 front. you need to have the larger flange. otherwise there won't be enough material. make sure you ask for 7/16 lug bolts as that is what the waggy has.

Is there any way to use shafts from an F-150? They're 5 x 5.5. They're probably longer, but I suppose you could have them shortened. Not sure how that works with the c-clip though.

You cannot redrill the stock X axles for 5 on 5.5", there is not enuf flange (too little by about 1/4"). I had Dutchman make me a set and they still only have about 1/8" of flange on the outer edge of the screw in studs (otherwise it would be impossible to put my drum brakes back together). For those doing this conversion, I would recommend going to discs or using F150 drums (they are 5 on 5.5" already, larger, and same backing plate bolt pattern).

I am having Dutchman make me a set of shafts for the same app that you have. I don't have the Explorer disks for this reason, the flange is too small for my liking. I am using 6 lug K1500 rotors and Caddy calipers, it's the ticket for big 12" brakes and an e-brake......

BTW: I switched my waggy outers to 1/2 studs, WAY better!
