Tranny cooler install ? [Archive]

the top one is the return (to tranny) line. this is how i found out:

pull the plug wire off the coil. loose the fitting on the line going into the top of the radiator and pull the line away from the radiator. put the tranny in Neutral ( these trannies don't pump in Park). have a friend crank the engine and watch you to know when to stop. fluid should shoot out of the RADIATOR, meaning it would be going into that line you just disconnected and back to the tranny.

now, this is what i did. buy some Aeroquip Socketless fittings and hose and bypass the factory cooler (heater, your cooling system operates at 195º which is top end of the tranny temp scale) all together. run a big aux cooler. i use B&M p/n 70266 ($60 at Summit Racing) and Aeroquip AN-6 fittings. the fittings fit perfectly in the rubber hose that runs across the frame rail up in the front pass-side corner of the truck. they are push-on, but mine have been in service for over a year with no problems or leaks to this area of the system. get the steel NPT to AN adapters to convert the cooler to AN fitting. use teflon pipe dope on the pipe threads, but not on the AN fittings (i just lubed them with tranny fluid).

i also run a Perma-Cool (p/n 1791) remote filter whick takes the same filter as the engine does (NAPA Gold 1452). i buy them by the case and change the filter every 5000 miles and add a quart of fluid. i then change the fluid, filter inside the pan, and remote filter every 15000 miles.
