i ran into a guy today who had another nissan and he used an 82 2WD steering box but changed out the sector shaft........but the box housing itself was much beefier looking for sure..............way more material around the mounting tabs.....I will post a pic later

here is a pic of the 2WD truck power steering box with a sector shaft out of a 280Z....but the box itself definately looks to be more beefy than the 4WD version. I have heard this is the same in the chevy trucks also, not sure why that is though.........anyways, here are a couple of pics to show the difference!
2WD box

4WD box broken apart but you can tell there is no material between the mounting tabs

Damn, that is a HUGE difference, looks like a much better design.

yes it is a big difference for sure......I was looking closer at the box that I put on the truck last week(from an 84), and noticed even its a little beefier than the 83 box that broke. I need to write down the production dates and take pics of all the boxes........I am going to the wrecker tomorrow to measure up some 2wd boxes and take pics......I will post back after I do that
I'm glad you said something about the '84 box being beefier, from the pic of yours they looked the same, but I just went out and looked at mine (since it is an '84) and I do see some extra beef around the mounting tabs, not anywhere close to as beefy as that 2wd one, but still a little better.

Do you know if you have to change the sector shaft? Are the pitman arms diffrent, is that why?
thanks

I dont think you have to change the sector shaft to make it work, if I remember correctly this guy changed his because the shaft he swapped into the 82 box was longer allowing the pitman arm to hang down a little lower to accept his sketchy steering setup........I dont think it will be an issue with highsteer though but I will take some pics and measurements and post up for sure.
As for the pitman arm, I dont know if the 2WD ones are the same as the 4WD.....I am curious about this as well becuase we just spent good money on a highsteer kit and had the drag link end reamed out to match the factory pitman arm TRE! If they aren't the same I will see if buddy at the wrecker will allow me to unbolt the 2wd pitman arm from a box on one of the trucks and bolt on my spare 4wd pitman arm and compare....I will keep you guys posted. I was gonna go today but other things came up but I will aim for tomorrow
hlb3.......still got to get those dual case pics for you, dad has the truck at his place right now so I will go over and get them for you ;)
Cool, I was hoping you didn't forget about them. I'm going to a big swap meet this weekend and hoping to find another t-case for a little cheaper than the wreckin yard, hopefully with the large flanges. I'm hoping I will have dual cases in and tested before memorial weekend, got a big trip planned!
