Hey all, I am a newbie so be patient. I bought a clean 74 FJ40 with 4 speed and original motor in October, I have been trying to get the speedo to work ever since. I have replaced the cable, the small gear that goes on the end of the cable and made sure that the cable is properly plugged into the back of the dash. I am now fully convinced that the gear inside the tranny is gone. Was this gear nylon? How hard is it to pull out and can I do it in my driveway? Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

I assume your talking about the transfer case as this is where the speedo cable goes...yes its easy to do in the driveway. Pull the cable off the speedo sensor, the disconnect the rear driveshaft and with the tranny in neutral spin the transfer case and see if you get any movement on the pin if not then you need to pull it. With a rag ready loosen the bolt just to the left of the sender unit and pull it out, plug the hole and inspect the gear, you can get these from the dealer, Man-a-Fre or Spector. Keep them coming and get yourself a TLC Chasis Manual, worth its weight in copper ok maybe nickle but still good. Let me know if we can further assist.
