So I was headed out Friday night and got out the driveway up the street and the truck ('97 Chevy 1500 4x4 350) starting bogging down. It died, I pulled over and immediately thought is was the fuel pump. When I tried to start it, it was like the whole truck was shaking. Kinda weird. Got it home and couldn't hear the pump kicking on when the truck was in the "on" position. Went to relieve the pressure on the fuel system and there wasn't any. So I got a tank with the pump and everything from the pick-n-pull this morning out of a '92 Chevy. So I put the new pump and everything in my tank and it still won't start. No more bouncing when trying to start it. And there's pressure in the system so I know it's getting fuel. Electrical's fine. Any ideas?? I'm stumped and poor so I need to figure this out.:D :D Thanks

i just took one into the dealer today at work.
1998 1500 5.0
turns over hard, but eventully starts, also has service engine light on and pings under load.
i narrowed it down to timing or clogged injectors(common)
couldn't spend all day on it(don't have a code scanner)i should know wed. what the deal is.
i'll let you know.

Stupid question, but did you check the fuel filter?? I have a 97 with 60k on it, and it was doing the same thing. I took it in (Under extended warranty) and they ended up changing the pump, some pressure thing, and were about ready to start on the injectors when I said "Did anyone check the fuel filter?" Sure enough, changed the filter and fired right up. I guess that is my fault for "assuming" that they would know what they are doing.
Also, in 97 they went to the Vortec, but in 92 it was TBI (I think, I know it was not a vortec in 92) Maybe the fuel pressure is different for the 92 pump? Or the wiring is different?? I don't know just shooting out ideas.

Yeah, the pump is different on the Vortec (96-up). They kicked the pressure to sonething like 80 psi - I can check the actual numbers this evening; I've got a full set of shop manuals for my '96 at home. You've got the wrong pump, and when I replaced mine a few months ago it wasn't that expensive to get a new AC Delco pump from Auto-Zone. Just buy one, and a new filter, and be done with it.

I have a new fuel pump sitting in my shop. When I pulled the tank the first time the hardlines got fubared. (Should of just pulled the bed). But since I got such a good deal on the entire setup ('92 pump and everything) I just put that one in to see if it would work so I could take the other one back.
So, I guess I'll try putting the '97 pump in the '92 assembly and hope that works. AND change the filter while I'm at it. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks

That's a pretty good bet. Since you have all the system de-pressurized anyway.
