that's what rockware uses for their rear tire carriers... works good.
matzell 03-08-2005, 04:28 AM I used a 1 inch axle from northern and then got a 1 inch collar from grainger. It fits perfect and is 3 inches long so you can weld 2x2 or 2x3 to it.
Foxfab 03-08-2005, 05:05 AM www.rockstomper.com uses trailer parts also. might be easier to just buy one from Scott.
BEATERYOTA666 03-08-2005, 10:32 AM we've used trailer spindles before on our bumpers, i think lukes found a better sealed bearing and spindle combo though. try calling 4x4 labs(530-477-0140)4x4labs.com
OnTheSpot 03-08-2005, 08:27 PM I'll second Rockstomper.com, that is where I got my trailer spindle for my swing out tire carrier. Mine works great.
Killerpee 03-08-2005, 08:36 PM I've got one of the setups from "Priest" on the board that I won in the Socha raffle. I don't need it will be happy to sell it to someoone. Let me know.
mr_manny 03-09-2005, 06:34 AM Killerpee,
Send me a couple of jpgs when you get a chance...
thanks,

If you end up buying one, I'd suggest 4x4labs, too. A little beefier and $5 more than the rockstomper ones. If anyone wants to see pics of a broken spindle, let me know. :(
mr_manny 03-10-2005, 11:49 AM Thank you all for the spindle input, how about some carrier design ideas?
carrier should also accommodate jerry can...
some quick early jpg ideas:
Don't be shy :D
thanks,

mr_manny 03-10-2005, 11:50 AM here is a virgin for your creative juices...
Rockzar 03-10-2005, 12:03 PM youre gonna have cooler rack envy sooner or later. I would try to put that in there too.
you can sometimes get away with putting a can between the cooler and the tire. and many put the can behind the tire, or on the spindle, bolted to the rim..
Can't wait to see it!
And oh, be sure to weld that spindle on extra good. Sucks when they break off..

oakley 03-10-2005, 04:34 PM If you want the cooler and tire swing out model it after the Man A Fre rear bumper it is a great design. One came with my FJ40 when I bought it and I love it. THe only issue is on mine it is spindles & bushings which suck but if you use the 4x4 labs spindle and bearings it would be great. There are a lot of picuters on MAF's site. Good design that you could build for a lot less.
Pytbool 03-11-2005, 05:14 AM So how many people have used a trailer spindle and had it snap? I have a bent 4000# axle that I was thinking of using the spindles on.
I see lots of bumper builds that use them, but no one updates the longevity after 2 or 3 years of wheeling. :D

The one i've seen break was on a tire carrier that Mixmaster and I build for a guy in our club. It was on a FJ62 and held a 33" spare and a high-lift. It broke after about a year and a half of use.
mr_manny 03-11-2005, 09:41 AM any opinions on using DOM tubing, and some zerks?
failure rates?
manny
Flatty 03-11-2005, 10:41 AM Manny, let me know when you plan on doing this. I want to build myself a swing out carriere as well. May as well build 2 of them at once.

That's how I built mine. I have a dual pivot rear bumper, with the pivots made from schedule 100 gas pipe sleeved with DOM. It is a tight fit, so it doesn't rattle, but still opens easily. I carry a 36" swamper spare, jerry can, and a front hub as a mount on one side and a cooler / blender mount on the other. I've run this way for about 5 - 6 years now with no problems. The tall pivot provides both good support and corner protection.
Best thing is... All the steel to build the bumper and rack were found in my garage and a dumpster near work. Here is a shot of the passenger side pivot.

Shipwreck, Did y use any bearings in that spindle, or just the 2 pipes. I like the idea, and may ave to roll down to SJ to check it out.

mr_manny 03-11-2005, 01:11 PM Shipwreck,
Carrier looks GREAT, do you think you might be able to post/or send me a few more pics?
Dima,
Will definitely let you know before I'm ready to do this.
I don't own bender :( I may have to bring a case of   over to Toploader's ranch :D
input/opinions/pics are appreciated,
manny

I got the welder, and I can have access to a bender. I am going to check out spindles at a shop close to my house. I figure if we build 2 of them at once, it will be nice and easy. Here is what I want:
Spindle on one side. Solid stock going for a bumper, with lights in it. Off that, a tube that comes up to a 90* angle with a 6 lug spindle and rotor on it (for a spoare tire carrier). I want to brace the fawk out of it so that I t can handle the weight of a 38. Then on the other side I want tomake a small cooler rack for a nice cooler. Let me know if this works for you. I am going to draw it up tonight on some graph paper with some measurements. If you want to wait a few weeks, I am planning on going to Marky's to bend up a cage, either that, or bending it up down at Chris's house in San Jose.

RedFJ 03-11-2005, 04:30 PM I have used the trailer spindle and seen them bent and broken. What I started doing was using a piece of solid shaft, 1.5" to 2" thick, and drop over a sleeve of DOM, have to do a little sanding for a good fit sometimes. It's much stronger and have seen one of them cave in a Jeep tailgate as it bent the frame rails when he backed into the tree. Here is a link to a pic..

Here is another where I slit a piece of pipe and welded a tabs to both sides fo the split, threw some bolts through to apply tension, works pretty good.

mr_manny 03-11-2005, 08:46 PM SWEET carrier REDfj...I like the DUAL horizontal bar design.
thanks for the pics :D
manny
seapotato 03-12-2005, 07:41 AM I'd have to second...or third even, the bar and pipe system.
trailer spindle looks nice but hardly seems worth it. I welded a vertical bar onto one side of my bumper, and my carrier slips down over it. doesn't rattle, and didn't cost 50bucks.
I suppose that theoretically where I to roll, and the latch broke it could come off, but I'm pretty sure I'd be more worried about other shit then.
right now, I'm just in the process of changing the tire mount around a bit . I was going to bolt a front spindle on to something and have the tire mount to a front hub with lockout and everything....so far, mounting the spindle is proving to be a pain in the ass, and I can see that at some point soon, I'm going to get fed up with it , and weld it on there..... :shaking:
cheers,
ryan
Pytbool 03-13-2005, 08:08 PM RedFJ - Nice work, I like the solid round/DOM with zerks. Simple and strong.
Shipwreck - I like your corner protection. Doesn't look like it hangs out too much and has nice lines.
