: Transfer case swap

I've searched an searched but I can't find and answer to this.

How difficult is it to swap out a NP 203 for a 208?
Are there driveshaft length changes, different yoke sizes etc.?

I bought a Toyota pickup with a 307/TH350 and a 203 already installed and I want to loose the 300lb 203 and replace it with a lighter 208. Now if it'd been a 205 under there I'd consider living with the extra weight for the gear drive but I really don't want full time 4WD and I don't want to spend the $$$ for a conversion kit if I can get out cheaper with a used 208 and kill two birds with one stone.

Also what do I look for when I go case shopping? Obviously I want a pass side drop but what about spline count etc? How do I know someone's not trying to sell me a case for a 400 or a 700-R4?

It would probably be much simpler and cheaper to put in a NP205. Did they ever mate a 208 to a 350, or was the 208 mounted to a 700r4? I'm not so sure about that...
The 205's are bullet proof, 208's are cast aluminum, all it takes is one rock!:skull: If you do put in a 205 you will have to shorten the rear, and lengthen the front.:skull:

I don't know about cheaper. Around here people want an arm and a leg for a 205.
I'm really not that concerned about hitting the case on rocks, a good skidplate should take care of that.

I got this out of the Pirate Bible
NP208 = 2.61
1981-1987 all 1/2 and 3/4 tons with auto (1981-TH350; 1982-87 TH700R4; 1981-1987 3/4 ton only, TH400) or SM465 4 speed manual.

Maybe what I should be asking is when you replace a 208 with a 203 what do you have to change and then I'll just reverse the process.:D

203 to 208 huh.

They did put the 208 behind a TH350 in the early 80's.
You will need the correct adapter.
The spline counts should be the same, but the output shaft from your TH350 is probably too short. The ones that connect to a 203 stick out about an inch. The one needed for a 208 sticks out about 5 inches I believe.
You will also need to modify your crossmember lower.
Also, the output of a 208 is a slip yoke.:nuke: So you will need a new rear driveshaft.

All that said, I would be more than happy to sell you a t-case that only has about 80K and is in good shape with everything needed to connect it to a th700.;) Oh yeah I would throw in a perfectly rebuilable th700 to ease in your conversion.:D

I don't know you you consider and arm & leg but I have a 10 spline input with fixed yokes front & rear I'd let ya have for a modest fee. I live in Kansas so I'm somewhat close. email me at hewl35@hotmail.com

Hmmmm perfectly rebuildable 700-R4 & a 208. Now you got me thinking........
I was going to go through the 350 if I did the t-case swap anyway so adding a long output wouldn't be a problem...but on the other hand I could just as easily rebuild a 700-R.
If I can't find anything locally for my 350 I may take you up on that Big B!

Well I think $600 that the guy in the paper was asking is an arm and a leg but it's not there anymore so someone bought it.
For another $200 I could get a new Gen2 Doubler Dual Transfer Case!

The front and rear driveshafts were already modified with GM yokes.
Is the 208 yoke completely different as in U-joint size? Couldn't I just put the slip yoke on my driveshaft w/ a new C clip U-joint?
